How many people do you cook for?

Six or more

Get a range cooker! Back to the real world where money doesn’t grow on trees. The best thing to do if you have a big family and want a lot of space in your oven is to get a double oven with two large cavities. One cavity, usually the top one, is a grill as well as an oven, which is great for cooking separate dishes at the same time, as you can cook them at different temperatures. The usual size for a big double oven is approximately 97 litres, 70 litres in the bottom cavity and 27 in the top.

Family of Four

There are a few options for a family of four. You can either get a double oven withpicture 3 two cavities or an oven and grill. With the double oven and grill, one cavity will be quite a bit smaller than the other, but as with the double oven with large cavities you can cook different dishes simultaneously.

The oven and grill is still great as you have more cooking space, but the top cavity is only a grill so you have less variety in your cooking.

Single ovens are great for young couples and first buyers, big families however, defiantly shouldn’t write them off. The largest single ovens have around 70 litres capacity, more than enough for everyday cooking. If you want the effect of a double oven without compromising on space then look out for a single oven which has a divider. Some Samsung models have two fans so when the divider is placed in the cavity you get the same effect as a double oven; separate temperatures, different cooking functions and no flavour transfer.

If you are really keen on a large single oven, take a look at the Hotpoint Open Space. Through a clever design it offers 20% more space than a single oven with the same dimensions and you can cook on all four levels at the same time.

Something to consider: When thinking about an oven’s capacity, it’s a good idea to take the number of shelves it has into account. Standard ovens come with 2 shelves: a roasting/grill pan with wire insert and a wire shelf.
