Cooking Appliances Overview
Whether you're looking to create top notch haute cuisine, or just whipping up a simple dish, choosing the right cooking appliance is important to you and your family. Here at ao.com we've got a few handy hints to help you choose the right model.
What do I need to consider when buying a cooking appliance?
If you're an occasional cook or ready-meal connoisseur, a microwave oven may be all you need. However if you're a fan of cooking meals of many courses or impressing at dinner parties, you'll want to make sure your electric oven or gas oven's up to the task.

Remember, size matters! Capacity is shown in litres of useable space, so you may wish to compare the interior space of one model versus another. But make sure to measure the aperture, or opening, thoroughly, as size restrictions will be a major factor.

Range cookers are the largest, measuring between 90 and 122cm in width - at their widest they're twice the size of a standard unit! They're a passionate cook's dream, as you can choose gas, electric or dual-fuel models (if you're not sure of the difference, please keep reading!).
What types of ovens are there to choose from?
There are single ovens for smaller spaces, double ovens for capitalising on vertical space, as well as built-in ovens and built-under, which work together with your cabinetry to create a seamless look. Freestanding cookers are a great choice too, as they come with 2 cavities and a hob in one and just slot into place.

Another consideration is fuel type. Gas ovens can be advantageous as may be cheaper to run. Electric ovens may heat up slightly more slowly, but distribute heat more evenly through the oven, ensuring an even result. Often, the choice comes down to what your home is already wired for.

You'll want to consider whether the oven you'd like to buy is conventional or convection, the latter using a fan to help move hot air around and provide more even cooking. There are fan ovens, which are always electric, and fan-assisted ovens, which have a standard heating element with a fan located at the back and these ovens can be gas or electric.
What types of hobs are there to choose from?
Your main three hob choiceswill begas, ceramic (electric)or induction (also electric). Gas hobs can reach full flame with a quick turn of a button, so they're very responsive. Ceramic hobs are slower but provide an even heat across the bottom of the pan. Induction hobs heat food quickest and are the safest, since they heat the bottom of the pan and not the hob's surface. You'll needspecialised magnetic pans, but since induction is the most energy efficient, it's possible to make up the cost as you use the appliance.
What type of cooking appliance is right for me?
With so many brands to choose from, you may feel yourself gravitating to one or another just by your gut feelings. For example, Neff ovens provide cutting-edge technology for modern-minded chefs, whereas Rangemaster cookers specialise in investment cookers for big families and tradition-loving chefs. Style-conscious consumers may fall in love with the facia design of a Belling cookers or the retro look of a Smeg.
