Freezer Capacity Buying Guide

Capacity

Freezer capacity is measured in litres, and 18 litres is the equivalent of one bag of shopping. For small households, a capacity of around 50-100 litres should do, giving you enough room to store 3-5 shopping bags worth of food. If you have a larger household or would like to be able store food in bulk, you may want to consider a larger model like a chest freezer.

Size / Type

Every home is different, so you’ll need to consider what type of freezer you need. Under counter models sit neatly underneath your worktop. Built-in models are hidden away inside a cabinet for a more seamless look. Whereas upright freezers are much taller. They require more space, but they also give you more storage. Chest freezers are ideal for the garage or utility, giving you loads of room to stock up on everyday essentials.

Storage

Think about the kind of food you like to buy and what you’ll be freezing. A larger model will allow you to shop less by freezing in bulk. Chest freezers open from the top, giving you access to one big open space. Other freezer types will have a combination of either shelves or drawers to make organising easy. Clear drawer fronts will allow you to see exactly what food you’ve got stored.

Frost Free

Having to defrost a freezer can be a real pain. When ice builds up it takes up space, makes your food harder to separate and wastes a lot of energy. By choosing a model that’s totally frost free, you’ll never need to worry about manually defrosting again. Your food will also remain in better condition. And, because it’s more efficient, it’ll save you money on your bills.
