    Crafts: Embroidery Hoop Place Names

These sweet place names make perfect menu holders and your fabric choices determine the look!

"This idea was inspired by something I recently featured in issue 7 of 91 Magazine, where we used embroidery hoops with little pockets for storage in a craft room. There’s a bit of a trend at the moment for using embroidery hoops within your décor, but here, rather than hanging them on the wall, I’ve used them within table settings as beautiful handmade place-names. They also double up as lovely personalised gifts that your guests can take home."

    Here's what you'll need...

    • Embroidery hoops (I used 10cm hoops)
    • A selection of patterned fabric
    • Calico / plain fabric
    • Disappearing ink pen
    • Embroidery thread & needle

    Here's how they're done... Step 1

Cut out pieces of your patterned fabrics that are a bit bigger than your embroidery hoops.

    Step 2

Using your disappearing ink pen you can either write your guests names freehand, or what I did was print the names off from the computer using a nice font, and then traced over the names onto the calico fabric.

    Step 3

Check the positioning of the calico fabric on your hoop, and double fold the top edge.

    Step 4

Stitch a hem at this double fold, which will make the top of your pocket nice and neat.

    Step 5

Place your calico fabric in the hoop on its own.

Stitch over the name using embroidery thread. I used a backstitch with 2 threads.

    Step 6

Once you’ve finished stitching, open your hoop again and place your patterned fabric under the calico fabric, and trim the edges at the back.

You can customise these to suit your event and they are perfect for Christmas as you can add an extra little gift for your guests in the pocket too!
