"Good value good-looker"
Pros: Value for money, looks good
Cons: grill element not great
"I needed a black fairly compact microwave with grill which matched our new kitchen without taking too much worktop space but still able to take proper size dinner plates and robust enough for daily use by all 4 members of our a busy family.
The Samsung satisfies on all these counts and is very good value as well as being a smooth design which merges well with our other black appliances in the kitchen (even though the handle is brushed stainless steel and not black like it looked of some of the website photos)...
I guess the only reason I find it difficult to be more enthusiastic is comparison with what I am used to! In our case that was a big old 1000w Panasonic combination oven which served us well for 13 years.
The Samsung is smaller (which is what I wanted) and lighter and more plactic-y which means it moves on the worktop and gives the feeling of being not as robust as the Panasonic. The rotating control knob seems a bit primitive and breakable too (but it has been OK so far!) The dark black glass of the door looks great but is, as other reviewers have pointed out, very hard to peer through to assess if your food is about to explode! I have also noticed the difference in cooking speeds that 800 rather than 1000w makes.
My main disappointment, though, is the grill feature. On my old Panasonic this is concealed in the "ceiling" of the oven cavity which helps to protect the element from any food spatters which inevitably burn off setting the smoke detector screeching! On the Samsung I was surprised to see the grill heating element sticks out from the back wall of the oven taking up valuable head room so that I can't fit my 16cm tall rice micro-cooking pot on the turntable. Needless to say, I haven't grilled anything or cooked rice yet!
If you read the instructions it doesn't take long to know how to use the Samsung (though my husband didn't and wondered why it was necessary to stand by and press the start button every 30 seconds...it isn't!) The deodorising feature is interesting and seems to work. The micro-cooking finished warning "beeps" are very shrill and loud so no worries if you are up the garden pottering and want to know when your peas are done!
Overall though, I think I have got a compact smoothly designed and reasonable quality microwave for a fifth of what I would have paid for a replacement Panasonic combination oven plus a lot more worktop space so I cannot complain!"
