Hotpoint WDAL8640G Freestanding Washer Dryer - Graphite

Lifts heavy stains and saves money on your wash. The Hotpoint WDAL8640G gives you an 8kg drum which washes up to 40 T-shirts and dries 6kg (that’s around 21 wet T-shirts). There’s an Anti-Stain wash which uses a constant temperature to help lift out stubborn marks, while the eco wash uses small bursts of energy over a longer wash to keep your electricity costs low. It’s so effective this model is rated A for efficiency and costs just £27.46 a year to run. Very impressive for a machine that does the job of two appliances in one.

"Can't Fault It"

Pros: Value for money, Easy to use, Good build quality, Quiet, looks good

Cons: none

"I've had a Dyson washing machine for 10 years and was used to having a large drum and the ability to totally customise the wash/temp/spin as I wished. But when it packed up in December and couldn't be repaired I didn't have hundreds of pounds to spend on a replacement. I also wanted to thoroughly research our purchase and found this website really useful, hence this extended review!

I chose the Hotpoint based on other good reviews and because it was the cheapest, large capacity, AAA rated washer dryer available for next day delivery. I took a chance on buying unseen and have not been disappointed!

This machine is not quite as advanced as the Dyson but at a third of the price, and with a dryer as well, I cannot fault it!

The Hotpoint has lots of wash options; I choose one that best suits my idea of the required wash time and temp, I don't necessarily use the suggested program for the type of washing I have eg cottons/synthetics etc

In fact I have tended to stick to the same program and just change the temperature I want things washed at. If I still need to tweak I can then either do a Super Wash for really filthy stuff (clothes I've worn round the farm, dog drying towels etc) or a Time Saver wash for things that are lightly soiled.

I've yet to try the Eco option as I use a powder and the Eco option is best with liquid but I can see how that could save water and energy on 'normally' soiled items.

I haven't used the drying function yet - I had a massive backlog of laundry to do since our old washer packed up weeks before this purchase so the Hotpoint has just been washing - endlessly in fact, easily one or two loads per day for a fortnight now, and it has coped easily!

We still have what I considered a large capacity dryer -6kg- which is doing all the drying for now. It was bought second hand a couple of years ago so I decided a washer dryer would be a wise move in case it gives up.

I didn't realise it is the same capacity as the Hotpoint so I'm pleasantly surprised that I have not compromised there either and I will not need to decant clothes in future when I want to wash and dry in one go as this machine should manage the lot.

The drying times look a bit longer than I'm used to, but I don't honestly think I'll notice. In fact it'll be nice to put dirty clothes in at night and find clean dry clothes there the next morning!

I am slightly wary of the drying ability as I have used a different washer dryer in a holiday cottage and was not impressed. It's a different brand, smaller capacity, it was slightly cheaper to buy, and unfortunately I found it left everything crumpled and not always completely dry so it all needed ironing, which I was not happy about!

I have not really experimented with the drying options to see if this issue can be solved and as such I decided not to let this affect my decision to purchase a washer dryer and other reviews of this Hotpoint convinced me it would be as good as a stand alone tumble dryer.

The one thing I would like to control is the spin speed - I went for a fast spin machine thinking it would reduce drying times but not all programmes allow 1400, instead automatically selecting 800 for programmes which could maybe handle a higher spin.

If you feel the need you can always choose the extra spin for items you think need it, but so far everything has been dry enough after the recommended cycle to go straight in the dryer so perhaps this is something else I can experiment with.

I don't find this machine noisy - it's under the stairs in the hall, with a door between the hall and the living room. The dishwasher makes more noise than this with the kitchen door closed.

I think it is easy to use- just read the book and keep the pages of wash cycles open while you get used to it, I've still got mine handy!

It seems like a solidly built machine, it looks good, and the price was great - even my husband was very impressed with my choice having not seen it before hand!

All in all we are very happy with the machine so far."

"Large capacity and good results"

Pros: Value for money, Easy to use, Good build quality

Cons: no delay setting, no time display

"Good washer dryer. Very very quiet until the spin cycle. Could do with a time remaining display and a delay setting. Normal wash cycles are 3 hours but the "time saver" setting reduces this by half and wash still good. Drying good too. Also a large drum so lots firs in!"

"Really Happy"

Pros: Value for money, Easy to use, Good build quality, Quiet, looks good

Cons: none

"Really pleased with this machine, especially as our old machine sounded like a space craft taking off. Great value for money on this machine and looks and works great. "Excellent Washer Dryer!"

Pros: Value for money, Easy to use, Good build quality, Quiet, looks good

Cons: none

"This Washer Dryer is amazing! Especially for the price. I was worried that it would dry automatically after every wash but this isn't the case so there is really nothing to lose by purchasing this product. I am very very happy with it :)

ps- It did take me awhile to find the just wash without a dry mode, it's the sunshine symbol on the drying dial."

"Early Christmas Present"

Pros: Value for money, Easy to use, Good build quality, Quiet, looks good, makes life easier for mum & dad

Cons: none, so far

"An early Christmas present for my daughter and son in law, whose previous m/c was the Indesit model highlighted on Watchdog, but no joy from their customer services team. As my wife was doing all their washing whilst we tried to gain compensation, it was an opportunity which I was pleased to take. The "kids" are very happy with all aspects of their new machine, as, of course, am I and my wife."

"Made 'too clever'"

Pros: Value for money

Cons: Noisy, no spin buttons - only slow spin option, 'end' light stays lit, noisy pump, noisy water inlet, no timer to show length of wash, noisy dryer due to pump, long washes - remember to select 'time saver', dryer smells - due to newness?

"Important 'options' have been taken away e.g. you can not select a 1200 or 1400 speed - the machine determines what speed to spin clothes at. You cannot open the door to check how dry the clothes are when you have selected one of the 'drying modes' and the dryer smells rubbery - not sure if it is the newness of the machine (I have used it 15 times now). The water inlet is noisy. The pump and dryer is noisy - it sounds like someone sawing (dryer uses pump to extract water as it dries). A simple wash at 30 deg. takes 3 hours - by selecting 'time saver' it is reduced by half. It would have been helpful to have a timer - showing how long the cycle will take. The 'end' light stays lit when the cycle has finished. BUT.. it is quiet when it is in washing mode."

Hotpoint WDAL8640G

With the Hotpoint WDAL8640G you’re getting all the functions of two appliances in the one machine, so it’s great for saving space in your kitchen or utility room. There’s an 8kg drum inside, which holds up to 40 T-shirts for your wash cycles. Very handy for bulkier items like bath towels and bed sheets too.

For drying cycles, you’ll be able to get through 6kg of wet clothes at once. That’s the equivalent of 18 T-shirts as your wet clothes need more room to move around in the drum. There are options for sensor drying too, which means your cycle will automatically stop once your clothes are dry. Your fabrics are protected from over-heating damage, so they won’t get rough and crispy.

There’s an anti stain option to help you tackle really grubby marks. It keeps the water at 40°C for longer than standard cycles, which gives your detergent more time to work away at stains. It’s a cycle sure to come in handy if you’ve worn a white shirt on Bolognese night.

You can keep your wash costs low with the eco wash too. By using short bursts of energy during a longer wash period, your clothes come out just as clean as normal washes, just at a fraction of the cost. In fact, it’ll cost you just £27.46 a year to run. Hardly surprising then that this model has earned itself an A rating for efficiency.
