Plankton Sampler (Click link for project details)

Robotic Manufacturing

Software for coordinated control of multiple robotic work cells, including part queuing, exception processing, and fail-restart processing.

Parallel Processing Development Tools

Co-developed a cross-compiler for development of parallel-processing applications using the Inmos Transputer.
TCP/IP services for a popular PC-based real-time operating system, QNX.

Electron-Beam Furnace Operation

Software for control of vacuum furnaces for processing of exotic metals, and for vacuum-deposition of metal films. This work controls furnace power level, calibrates and controls electron-beam motion, and responds to safety interlocks.

IrDA Communication Processing

Infrared data communications are among the features which are being implemented in personal computers, palmtops, and PDAs. Alpha Omega has provided PC system interface software for IrDA communications at several megabaud sustained transfer rates to make the marriage between new IrDA interface hardware products and the systems in which they are installed.

Environmental Measurements

We have worked with numerous scientific research projects in development of X-ray densitometers, flourometers, meteorological measurements, ocean current and tide measurement, river flow measurement, energy use monitors, animal and platform tracking, and radio, satellite, and telephone-based data collection. Alpha Omega has provided short-run manufacture of some of the resulting instruments, and we have also assisted our customers in setting up contract or in-house production and test arrangements for items of their manufacture.

Puffin Egg Incubation

This project had the goal of measuring the environment of the eggs of tufted puffins. We packaged a miniaturized monitoring system in a molded epoxy replica of the egg. The system recorded temperature and motion, to learn how often and in what direction the adult puffins rotate the egg. This data was used to accomplish the first artificial incubation of puffin eggs.

Health Care Data Acquisition

This system is used to acquire current measurements of the status of patients who receive care for chronic disease. These measurements can be provided either by the patient or by a care provider, and historic and current data access, information security, care planning, worker and patient scheduling, communication, and interoperation with other software packages are featured in addition to basic data collection. The result is improvement to both cost efficiency and quality of care.

Realtime Machine Tool Control

Our hardware and software are used to control a large machining process, in which machine components weighing thousands of pounds move under closed-loop computer control at speeds up to 15 inches/second, with positioning uncertainties better than 0.001 inch. Alpha Omega has provided custom-manufacture of this control package since its development in 1985.
