With Bonfire Night tomorrow, it’s time to think of treats. It would, of course, be easy to quickly nip to the shops and buy a toffee apple but I just think it’s nice to create your own, especially if you’re planning to watch the fireworks from the comfort of your own home.

It’s also nice to have some homemade autumnal sweets for guests if you’re planning a party. Autumnal food (as you probably already know by now) is high on my list of favourites. Any autumnal food, really. So, why not combine the best things about the season and offer treats that if not strictly healthy, at least look pretty and natural at the same time as tasting good. Toffee Apples are, of course, a classic. I know, I know, they’re usually bright red. However, taste-wise the red colour doesn’t actually add anything to the apples and since I decided to add cinnamon to the sugar, I felt that the original golden-brown colour was far more suitable. Yes, cinnamon toffee apples, a little like apple strudel on a stick. Well, sort of…



  • 1kg demerara sugar
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 15-20 small apples
  • 250ml water
  • 15-20 branches (short), wood skewers or wood lollipop sticks

I deliberately bought fun-sized apples as these are supposed to be treats and therefore don’t need to be extra large.

Be cautious as hot caramel can be seriously dangerous if it splatters onto skin

    Mix the ground cinnamon with the sugar.

    Insert the stick/branch into the apple until secure.

    Lay out the baking paper, use a wooden board underneath to protect any surface that might be prone to heat damage.

    In a large pot, heat the sugar and water on a medium heat while stirring. The thermometer should be in the mix from the beginning, putting it in when the caramel is very hot might damage it. Once the sugar is dissolved, turn up the heat and bring it to a boil.

    Leave to bubble until it reaches just over 150C (hard crack stage).Cinnamon Toffee Apples Step 5

    Take the pot off the heat and dip the apples, one after another, into the hot sugar.

    Put the apples onto the baking paper and leave to cool for an hour.

    That’s it already! A sweet cinnamon-apple treat perfect for children and adults. I hope you like it.
