Baking can be hugely satisfying and fun, and of course you generally get to eat the results. This satisfaction multiplies when chocolate is involved, as I’’m sure we can all agree.

What if you don’’t feel like baking or your oven is broken or you’’ve moved house …or you simply want to whip up a quick cake because time is tight? Well, a no-bake cake is the answer! This super-chocolatey one is the perfect treat for adults as well as children.

The original version is a kid’s’ party favourite in Germany called “Kalte Schnautze” or “Kalter Hund” which means “cold dog”. This clearly sounds worse than it is and no doubt relates to the fact that it’’s a chilled cake. It’’s also usually made in a rectangular bread tin, but I prefer a dome shape as it just looks more, –erm, –cake-like. You could even add a little rum if you intend to serve it to adults only! So, if you’’d like to whip this one up, then read on.


here's what you'll need...

  • 200g icing sugar, plus a little extra for dusting
  • 350g coconut fat
  • 3 eggs
  • A few Amaretti biscuits, for decoration
  • 85g cocoa
  • 200-250g plain tea biscuits

To remove the cake from the bowl, briefly dip in hot water to help the cake release from the bowl, then tip onto a plate or cakestand.

here's how it's done...

    On a very low heat, slowly melt the coconut fat and then leave to cool down to room temperature.

    Line a bowl with cling film.

    Whisk the eggs with a fork until combined.

    Now mix the cocoa and icing sugar together. Once the fat is cooled, mix into the cocoa/icing sugar.

    Add the eggs and mix with a spatula until you have a smooth cream.

    Now you can start to “assemble” your cake, start with a thin layer of chocolate cream and then add the first biscuit.

    Now add the next layer of cream and the next layer of biscuits. Repeat until you’’re out of cream – the final layer should be cream.

    Leave to cool for two hours before transferring into your fridge, cooling the cake too quickly in the fridge would result in a grey-ish look to the chocolate. After around 1 hour in the fridge the cake should be hardened. Remove from bowl and decorate with the amaretti biscuits and sprinkle with icing sugar, now it’’s ready to serve with a lovely cup of coffee!
