This is a simple afternoon project for the kids to create a pretty decoration for their bedroom using materials you have lying around the house, or that can be sourced super cheaply. Depending on the age of your kids, they may or may not need help with some aspects of the project.

here's what you'll need...

  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Tester paint pots or poster paints
  • Paintbrushes
  • Modelling wire
  • Scraps of fabric
  • Ribbon
  • Needle and thread

here's how it's done...

  • 1

Draw out shapes on the cardboard, either freehand, by drawing round objects (like your paint pots) or you could even make some templates for younger children to draw around.

Cut out the shapes and paint them in a few coordinating colours on both sides.

  • 2

While the paint dries, make a circle with your wire, use a small piece of tape to join the ends.

  • 3

Decorate your cardboard shapes with scraps of fabric – I covered some on one side, added a tail to the kite shape and some raindrops to the cloud shape. Use a few stitches to attach the fabric, or you could also use craft glue.

Using your needle and thread, add a length of thread to the top of each shape. Make the threads varying lengths.

  • 4

Position the shapes around your wire circle, and tie the threads around the wire. You can also add a small piece of tape to secure them if needed.

  • 5

Once all your shapes have been hung, wrap ribbon round the wire circle and finally use 3 lengths of ribbons to tie together at the top for hanging. Add some small stitches to where your 3 ribbons meet the wire circle to secure.  Tie in a bow at the top and hang.

This project is great for kids as they can get imaginative and hang all sorts of things from the mobile; ribbons, trims, or even some small toys! Let them play and express their creativity!
