Meet Katie, Children's Nurse for Derian House

I graduated from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in 2013 with a degree in Pre-registration Nursing (Children) and enjoyed the hands-on and varied nature of her course.

I now work at Derian House Children’s Hospice in Chorley and am responsible for leading the charity’s service for neonatal babies.

Derian House looks after more than 400 children and young people from across the North West of England, helping children whose lives are too short to make the most of every moment.

I  often meet a family before the baby is born and will guide a family through their options at what will be one of the most difficult times of their lives.

Make sure you look after yourself and maintain a good work/life balance. You’ll be glad you did as nursing is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world!

Katie's Tips

  • 1

Always keep your options open. You may have signed up for a degree in a particular area of study, e.g. children’s nursing, but even in that role, you will be expected to be an advocate for the whole family so expect to be flexible.

  • 2

Be prepared to work a full 37.5-hour week at placement on top of assignments – you may find you’re putting in a lot more hours than some of your friends on other courses!

  • 3

Take time out for yourself. You’ll be working full-time and also studying, so it’s easy to run yourself into the ground and want to give up. Make sure you look after yourself and maintain a good work/life balance. You’ll be glad you did as nursing is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world!
