How to reset a laptop

We’ll show you how to save your sluggish tech in a few simple steps.

Giving your laptop a reset is perfect if you’re giving it to someone else or if it’s struggling with simple tasks. By returning your computer to its original factory settings, it can work wonders for slow and sluggish tech.

Before you begin, make sure you have a backup saved of any essential files, documents or photos that you want to keep.

How to reset a Windows 10 laptop

  • Click on the Windows symbol in the bottom left corner to bring up the Start menu and select Settings
  • On the settings screen, click on Update & security and head over to Recovery on the left hand side
  • Click on Reset this PC
  • You can choose to either Keep my files, which deletes applications and settings but keeps your documents and other files, or Remove everything
  • You might be asked to pick a few more options. All you’ve got to do is choose what you want to keep or remove.
  • Once it says Ready to reset this PC, click Reset and wait for your laptop to be done. This might take a little while but it should give your device a much needed jumpstart. Grab yourself a cup of tea while you wait and the time will fly by!

How to reset an Apple MacBook

  • Restart your MacBook by clicking on the Apple logo in the top left and click
  • As it turns back on, hold down the Command key – it looks a bit like a four leaf clover – and R key until the macOS Utilities window pops up.
  • Select Disk Utility and head on to the next step
  • Click on the drive you want to reset and click on Erase. This gets rid of the old drive and replaces it with a fresh one.
  • Once you're back on the macOS Utilities menu, click on Reinstall macOS and follow the instructions onscreen.
  • Wait a few minutes and your MacBook will be as quick and as it ever was.

How to reset a Chromebook

  • Click the menu in the bottom right, then select the Settings icon and type in 'Reset'
  • You've got two options here, you can either return your settings to their original defaults with Reset, or remove all accounts and return your Chromebook to its original state with Powerwash.
  • You may have to restart your device, but this will be done in a jiffy.
  • Once your Chromebook has booted back up, follow the steps on screen and it will have reset in no time!
