My dishwasher won’t fill with water

There are a number of things that could be stopping your dishwasher filling with water. Something might be clogging the drain, the float valve could be stuck, or there may be an issue with the door. Whatever the problem is, our handy guide will help you find the solution.

Shut the door properly

It might sound simple, but make sure that your dishwasher door is closed properly when you use it. Most models can detect if the door is open, so it won’t fill with water until it’s been shut. Make sure it’s fully closed by giving it an extra push when you shut it. Some dishwashers even make a noise, so listen out for a locking or clicking sound.

Unclog the drain

Your dishwasher’s drainage pipe might be blocked, which would stop your appliance from filling with water. Before you do anything, turn your dishwasher off and look for the drain – double check your owner’s manual if you can’t find it. Unscrew the drain catch, take the filter out and remove anything that’s causing a blockage. Once you’ve cleared it out, put the filter back, screw the catch in and try using your dishwasher again.

Check the float valve

Sometimes, issues can be due to a stuck float valve. As water enters your machine, the float valve should rise. Once it reaches a certain level, it cuts the water off. If this is stuck however, it can cause problems with water going into your dishwasher. The float valve can be found at the bottom of your dishwasher, but check your product manual for the exact position. Take the lower racks out of your machine and push the float valve to see if it moves up and down. If it doesn’t, remove it and check for anything that could be stuck like food debris. Once you’ve put it back in, try your dishwasher again to see if it’s fixed.
