How to connect your laptop or tablet to a TV

Watch your favourite films and TV shows on the big screen.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to connect your laptop or tablet to a TV. You can link your laptop up using an HDMI, DVI or Micro DisplayPort cable, or use Google Chromecast to wirelessly hook your tablet to the big screen. Either way, we’ve got you covered.

Connecting a laptop to your TV with cables

Make sure you know which connections your TV will support. You’ll be able to tell by having a look at the back of your TV, and noting down the different shaped ports. There are a few types of cables you can use to connect your laptop or tablet to a TV:

  • HDMI – you’ll probably have one of these cables lying around, it looks kind of like a smile. Most laptops have a HDMI port so you won’t have a problem hooking it up to your TV.
  • DVI – some laptops will still have a DVI socket and you’ll be able to pick up a DVI to HDMI cable. These ports are slightly bulkier than HDMI with two screws either side.
  • Micro DisplayPort – this is the most advanced kind of display you can get. It lets you show 4K content from your laptop to your TV.

Actually connecting your laptop and TV together is super simple. Just match the cable with the ports in your laptop and TV. Then switch on the TV, change it to the correct input (HDMI 2 or something similar) and watch away!

  • Plug in your Chromecast to your TV, then plug the other end into a USB port on your TV or a power adapter.
  • Open up the Google Home app to connect your Chromecast or visit the setup site.
  • Once you find your device, follow the steps on screen and you'll be ready to cast!

All set! Look out for the special Cast icon – a TV screen with a Wi-Fi signal in the corner – and you can enjoy YouTube, Netflix and loads more on the big screen.
