How to set up a Nest smart thermostat

Control your heating remotely in a few easy steps.

When it comes to installing your Nest thermostat, we’d recommend having a professional do it. It’s super easy to set up once that’s done, just connect it to your Wi-Fi network and enter the correct information for your home. Our guide will show you exactly what you need to do in a few simple steps.

How to set up your Nest smart thermostat

Once your Nest thermostat has been installed, you’ll need to answer a few questions about your home. It uses this information to help set the perfect temperature and save you energy, pretty clever right? Simply turn the dial on your thermostat and select one of the choices. You’ll see options for:

Language – This also selects your time format. English (US) will display 12 hour time, while English (UK) has a 24 hour clock.

Internet connection – Select your Wi-Fi network from the list. If you need to enter a password, turn the ring to highlight the letter or number and then press the ring to select it. You can also use Shift if you need to switch between lower and uppercase.

Equipment – This section asks you questions about your home’s heating and cooling system. Don’t worry if you haven’t got a clue. The professional who installed your thermostat will have filled this section in for you.

Temperature – Tell your Nest thermostat whether you want it to heat or cool your home at first. Then you’ll need to choose your Eco Temperatures, which is how warm you want your house to be while you’re away.

System Test – After you’ve done all this, it’s time to perform a System Test to make sure everything works as it should do.

You’re nearly there now. All that’s left to do is link your smart thermostat to your Nest account.

  • Press the thermostat’s ring and choose Settings.
  • Turn it to Nest Account and press the ring to select it.
  • Select Get Entry Key to receive a short code. Make a note of it – you’ll need to enter it into your phone or tablet.
  • Open up the Nest app on your device and tap the Settings icon on the home screen.
  • Tap ‘Add product’. You can either scan the QR code that’s on the back of your thermostat or tap Continue without scanning.
