How to update your DVD or Blu-ray player

Find out how to quickly and easily update your DVD or Blu-ray player with this helpful guide

Much like computers and laptops, DVD and Blu-ray players run on software that needs to be kept up to date. With the arrival of new technologies like HDR, it’s always good to ensure your player keeps up so you can enjoy more of the good stuff.

Update directly through your player

Some DVD and Blu-ray players allow you to connect to the internet, whether that’s wirelessly hooking up to your home Wi-Fi or through an Ethernet cable. If your player is already online, it should let you know when it needs updating. If not, refer to your product manual to help you get connected and the player should then check for the latest software. You can also scroll through your settings and look for an Update or Set-Up option and manually search for updates.

Update through your computer

Don’t worry if you can’t access the internet directly from your player, you can still get the latest updates. You can find the most up to date software on the manufacturer’s website. If you’re not sure how to access this information, the product manual that came with your machine will point you in the right direction. Depending on your player’s compatibility, you can either copy the files to a disc or save to a USB stick. Follow the instructions for each method below:

USB update

  1. Download the latest update to your computer or laptop.
  2. Some files may have been downloaded in a .zip format. If so, right click and extract the files.
  3. Transfer the files to a USB stick, then safely eject.
  4. Turn on your player and make sure there’s no disc or other USB devices in there.
  5. Connect the USB stick that has the update files saved onto it.
  6. If your player doesn’t automatically recognise the device, you should be able to locate it within the menus.
  7. When prompted, follow the instructions to update.
  8. When the process has finished, unplug the USB, and if the player has turned itself off, turn it back on. Done!

CD/DVD/Blu-ray update

  1. Download the latest update to your computer or laptop.
  2. Some files may have been downloaded in a .zip format. If so, right click and extract the files.
  3. Copy the files to a compatible CD, then safely eject. You’ll need access to CD burning software to complete this step.
  4. Put the CD into your DVD player and it should automatically recognise the software update file.
  5. When prompted, follow the instructions to update.
  6. When the process is finished, remove the disc and turn the player off and on. Done!

The update process is different for each manufacturer and each model. If you’re having any problems, the manufacturers themselves are full of wisdom and will be able to help you out. If you need to get in touch with them, check out all their contact details here.
