Tried and Tested: Is the Sage Bluicer worth the hype, and how does it fare against regular blenders and juicers?

If you can’t start the day without a green smoothie, or a lemon and ginger shot is a vital part of your morning routine, the new Bluicer from Sage combines a blender and juicer into one. We challenged @vegan_at_tiffs to put it through its paces, and to find out if it’s worth the trade-up.

I like to maintain good health through nutrition, and so I’ve been trying to increase my fruit and veg intake. This is where juices and smoothies come into play. Not only are they both delicious, but they’re also packed with vitamins and nutrients, making it easy to reach my daily intake. However when it comes to kitchen appliances, it’s key to find one that’s worth the worktop space and, of course, the investment.

Let’s start with juicing! This gets rid of the pulp, so you’ll get a smoother drink. Can you tell us what ingredients you used for your juice? How did it taste, and how well did the bluicer hold up?

My juice was a mixture of celery, apples and ginger. Celery juice is super-popular at the moment, so I had to see what all of the fuss was about! It tasted way better than I had imagined and it came out of the juicer really smooth. I think this gadget is ideal for juicing and it definitely surpassed my expectations. It wasn’t over-complicated to use and the whole process was quick. I was amazed that my apples were able to go straight into the chute (whole), and the amount of juice that was created was incredible. Plus, the Cold Spin Technology absolutely kept my fresh juice cool.

Can you talk us through the benefits of a juice for you?

Shockingly, I don’t eat as many fruits as I would like to, and I find that I can consume a larger quantity in the form of juice. It just helps me sneak those extra fruits and veggies into my diet. I feel like there are many benefits to juicing - from flushing away toxins, to the abundance of nutrients and antioxidants that can be absorbed by our bodies. I also enjoy the art of making my own concoctions, which is perfect for my taste buds.

On to blending! This is a great way to create smoothies and cocktails. It keeps all the fruit’s nutrients and fibres, and creates a thicker drink that’s often more filling.

What ingredients did you blend? How did it taste, and how well did the bluicer blend?

I blended a mixture of frozen summer berries, bananas, acai and coconut water to make a delicious smoothie bowl. The bluicer had five different settings for blending, which is great for reaching your desired texture. Overall, it was really easy to use and the blending itself was very powerful.

Can you talk us through the benefits of a smoothie for you?

I enjoy starting the day with an on-the-go breakfast smoothie, especially during the warmer months - they’re just so nourishing and filling. The good thing about smoothies is that all the fibre is maintained. Again, it’s a great way to boost my fruit intake, and they’re packed full of antioxidants.

And finally, let’s give bluicing a go. This pulls out smooth juices from fruits and vegetables, but keeps all the goodness that gives us the texture.

Can you talk us through the drink you created?

To create my bluice I juiced cucumbers and apples, and then blended them with spinach and sunflower seeds.

What do you think the benefits of a bluicer are? Did you think it was gimmicky, or is it something you feel is missing from the market?

I think it’s great to be able to have a drink that’s almost as smooth as juice, with the added goodness of the blended parts too. Bluicing is a great concept and definitely something that I’ll be doing again.

How easy was it to clean the bluicer?

I’m thrilled that the bluicer was easy to clean, as this is one of the aspects I look for when buying new kitchen gadgets. Parts of it are dishwasher-safe too, which is always great.

Have you ever used a juicer or a blender before? How did the bluicer perform compared to other ones you’ve used?

I’ve haven’t used a juicer before, so this definitely sets a very high standard. I’ve used multiple blenders previously, and this one is up there with the best of them. The choice of functionality options alone make it a great choice.

Will you be juicing, blending or ‘bluicing’ in the future? Which one, and why?

All of the above! I think I’ll use the juicing feature most regularly, but I’m really looking forward to hosting a small dinner party and serving up frozen margaritas using the Frozen Cocktail mode.

Would you recommend juicers, blenders or bluicers for healthy eating? Why?

Yes I’d definitely recommend juices, smoothies and bluices to aid healthy eating, for many reasons. From maintaining a healthy immune system to having glowing skin, and they’ll even boost your mood and energy levels!
