So, what exactly is this Fortnite thing that everyone’s talking about?

The best way to describe this game, is that it’s a competitive, survival-style battle royale. It’s free to download on Xbox 360, PS4 and on Steam, which is certainly a huge contribution to it’s popularity.

The game has a couple of modes – the story mode, then the online Battle Royale. I’m going to go ahead and spend my efforts talking about Fortnite: Battle Royale, because so long after the game’s release, this is where you’ll find most of the attention is directed.

What’s so amazing about this game is it’s simplicity.

You drop onto the beautifully designed, super-vibrant island along with 99 other people. The aim is then simple, survive. The twist is that there’s a mad-crazy storm, and you’re in the ever-shrinking epicentre of it.

There are tons of caches throughout the map to explore and discover; with weapons and gadgets aplenty. If that wasn’t enough – you can actually build your own stuff to help you get the upper hand over your opponents. Collect materials along your journey to set up walls, ramps, stairs and more. This free-form building often leaves battle scenes looking like sky-high sculptures of modern art as players try to get the high ground. Stupidly cool.

Everything about this game is beautifully functional and pretty straight forward. You only have 5 inventory slots, which means you have to be really selective with the weapons you pick up, but also means you aren’t trying to scroll through to find the perfect weapon for the perfect situation.

What I will say though is that there is such a pace nowadays to the online gameplay, that when you enter your first battle, expect to be killed, immediately. And, probably the same for your second game. And third. But stick at it. I promise you’ll find your way and be shooting with the best of them pretty soon.

The character classes each have their own style, techniques and perks too. One of the very few costs involved in the game is the aesthetic of your character – which you can choose to indulge in or not. But they’re all bad-ass in their own way anyway.

If all this hasn’t made you want to delve in immediately – then I don’t know what will. Maybe check out some of the gameplay footage – or jump onto a Twitch stream and see for yourself. Get it downloaded!
