For those that play on PC, the keyboard and mouse may seem the go-to team for any situation. Whilst this is true, there are plenty of PC games that just feel so much better with a controller. The rumble feature really adds to those tense moments with explosions or impacts, whilst the thumbsticks allow for small, precise movements (on a good-quality controller).
This is where the Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows comes in. You’ll pay slightly more than other third-party control pads (at around £24.99 it is still a perfectly reasonable price though), but the difference in quality is noticeable. For example, those precise movements using the thumbsticks I mentioned earlier, on lower-quality pads they won’t even recognise you moving the stick until about halfway to the edge. On higher-quality pads, the slightest nudge is detected and really gives you a feeling of responsiveness.
Some games, such as those with an arcade feel, racing games or anything else where only a handful of buttons are needed can really benefit from a controller. Personally, I love gaming with a controller as it helps me to lose myself in the game I’m playing. When playing with keyboard and mouse, occasionally you may need to look down and see which key to press, breaking the immersion. With a controller, everything is at your fingertips and you can quickly forget you even have anything in your hands at all. When it comes to making gameplay just ‘feel’ better, a controller is my first choice.
