Repalcment Miele
3/5
This was a replacement for an existing Miele machine that was over 20 years old. To be honest a bit disappointed with the new machine as a lot has changed in 20 years and some of these changes seem like a downgrade in quality and the new machine will no way last the same amount of time. Firstly there is a lot more plastic everywhere and the door is now plastic and the door lock is electronically controlled. A lot of program options use the touchscreen in addition to the dial and no touchscreen will last that long. Miele’s own warranty is now only 2 years.
The machine itself is now bigger than before and the drum protrudes in a pointed heart like shape at the bottom where pipes use to run on the old machines, therefore meaning it sticks out a lot more if fitted under a standard 60cm worktop. The 1.5m drainage hose has also been moved to the top of the machine which means if you want to install to an outlet to the right of the machine then you may need an extension to the hoses. Miele wanted £50 to extend the hose as it was a little short.
The machine is fairly heavy in weight and has a very low clearance underneath, as the base is solid and close to the ground, meaning it kept bottoming out when trying to install into a narrow gap. Once installed it is fairly solid providing the floor is reasonably level.
From a performance aspect it has a variety of programs and an option to shorten the length of these so a typical standard wash can be done in about 90 minutes (15 minutes waiting for door release). It also has a quick wash of 20 minutes (plus door release wait). The door lock can be overridden and unlocked by ending the program by turning the dial to off.
The spin cycles are moderately loud but the noise from the drainage pump when emptying is very loud and fairly bad and resonates throughout the whole house. Clothes also seem to be damper at the end of a cycle than they were with the old machine.
The machine’s door is hinged on the right and Miele are the only manufacturer that have this set-up.
If you’ve never owned a Miele before then you probably would find it an acceptable upgrade as compared to some of the other manufacturers. If you’re already a Miele owner then you might want to consider one of other models but they are a lot more expensive.
