Touch screen controls on an oven, love it

A was a little nervous about using the oven with such few instructions but I have soon got the hang of it. If you are used to touch screen devices you'll pick it up quick too. By having a digital display and controls Sharp have done away with knobs and dials easily played with by little hands and have created a sleek looking oven. The oven has manual and pre-programme settings (auto cooking), I have only used the manual cooking settings and see no benefit to the pre-programmed settings. It feels like an unnecessary feature of this stylish and modern oven. The manual settings are simple and you can choose between different types of cooking like conventional, fan, grill, roasting etc. I tend to choose fan oven most of the time. The temperature is easy to adjust and you can set your cooking time, though I've set it to 2 hours and switch it off when I'm finished because it switches off automatically at the end of the cooking time, and not everything is cooked according to instructions. As it remembers your last settings I can start cooking very quickly with a simple temperature adjustment. You can also adjust these whilst cooking too. Other than holding the power button down to start or switch off the oven the touch screen is easy to use, unfortunately without a child lock it is easy for a child to change the temperature when it is on - however as I am usually in the kitchen or can hear it beep with the change by 18 month old hasn't caused this is be a problem. The oven comes with 2 racks and 2 trays, plus spit roast parts (I've not used these) and a grill. It's great having these interchangeable shelves but they do need storing, okay if you have an under oven drawer but not sure where I would store them without this kitchen feature. The telescopic arms create a shelf that is supported when pulled out, good for quickly checking on a cake or to lift a heavy lasagne out. I'm really pleased with the oven, touch screen is easy to use (after a few practice settings), I'm still discovering what this oven can do. It is a very pretty oven that is super functional, would highly recommend.

Pros: Ease to use, Good build quality, Looks good, Quiet

Top Oven. Cooks really well, but limited instructions

The Sharp KS-70T50BHH-EN single electric oven has a great range of features and settings with top and bottom heating elements, fan assisted and grill settings meaning you have a lot of versatility and the oven cooks food really well, producing great results. The touch screen control is a nice feature, but takes a bit of getting used to. The only issue I have had is working out how to use the oven to the best of its capability as the instructions are very limited and not very clear or helpful. Once you get your head around how to use the oven it’s really good and one I am very happy with so far. It is a roomy single electric oven which a large 78L capacity which is up there with the biggest single build-in ovens available. The energy rating is Class A which about standard for modern ovens these days. The overall look of the oven is stylish with a slick black glass finish that looks good in a modern kitchen, the touch screen control means that it can be easily kept clean as there are no knobs that can get always seem to attract a build up of grease or dirt (the glass on the interior of the oven door also slides out for cleaning). The oven comes well kitted out with shelves and trays, there is a single wire shelf, another wire shelf that can be used with the telescopic extendable rail (and a roasting rack for the telescopic rail) there is a deep tray and a shallow tray that fit on the ovens shelves or telescopic rail, two smaller trays, one with a wire rack for grilling, a handle that is used with the smaller trays and the roasting spit. The oven has a soft close door that I really like which operates smoothly. Inside the oven there is a handy retractable shelf which allows you to easily get food in and out of the oven. You can use the two racks on the telescopic rails or one of the trays, I initially thought the wire racks are to be used at the same time as this is how it arrived and a lack of instructions saying otherwise, but I have found it better to only use on at a time which means you need to store the other somewhere when not using. There are 5 rack height options within the oven so there are lots of options and with the range of shelves this means that you can fit plenty in and cook loads of food at the same time. There is also a bright oven lamp what comes on when you open the oven door and during cooking so you can see how food is cooking without opening the door. Onto use, you press the on touch button to operate the LCD display, on the main menu there is a settings option where you can adjust the brightness, the loudness of the beeps and set the time. Then there is the Automatic Cooking menu which boasts 50 built in programs created by pro-chefs. There are 6 ranges of dishes to choose from: SeaFood, Meat, Poultry, Baked Dish, Bread & Pastry, Cakes & Cookies & Deserts. Some people may find this feature of some use, but I feel it is a bit of a gimmick that will be getting little to no use my me. The idea is that you select a dish & its weight the program tells you what shelf to put it on and then selects the cooking mode and time for you automatically. However, the dishes you can choose from are a bit strange. For example, the Poultry setting has options for ‘Chicken Casserole’, ‘Whole Turkey’, ‘Gunnie Foul’, ‘Chicken Drumsticks’, ‘Pheasant’, ‘Peaking Duck’, ‘Partridge’ & ‘Goose’ but no roast chicken option? The Baked Dishes have some you may use such as Lasagne and Pizza, but again some strange ones such as German Pancake or Mashed Eggplant?? The Manual Cooking option is the option that I will be using day to day. Here you select the oven function, there are 8 to choose from: Defrost, Turbo, Fan Assisted, Conventional Cooking, Pizza, Grill, Full Grill and Full Grill & Fan. The instructions don’t really explain the difference between the settings well such as the different grill settings or what exactly the turbo does, it is only going to be through use that I get to grips with the best setting for different dishes. Then you set your temperature which can be set from 50 to 275 Degrees Celsius. There is then a Boost option (on/off), again not really sure what this does and again no info in the instructions. You then set the cooking time which will then tell you the end time, or you can set an end time. Once you are done you press the play button. The End time setting is a good feature, you can set the time you want the food to be ready and the cooking time/temperature and press play, the oven will then count down and switch on at the correct time to have the food ready for the set end time. This is a great feature but is not explained in the instructions and had to work this out myself. The oven also has a RoastPro Turnspit which you slot into a little hole in the back of the oven and use with the grill options, I am looking forward to giving this a go, but again it is going to be a bit of trial and error as the instructions are limited for what should be an attractive unique feature of this oven. The touch controls take a bit of getting used to and have a bit of a lag, especially when adjusting time or temperature settings. You scroll through the settings using the ok, up and down or back buttons and when you are ready you press the play button to go. When you press play and cooking starts you get a countdown timer that shows you how long is left which is good, you can also pause the cooking and then just press play to carry with the cooking which is a nice feature. The oven boasts catalytic lining and VapClean features which along with the sleek glass design should make cleaning the oven a low maintenance task. However again the instructions don’t really tell you about these features or how to use the VapClean and as this is a new oven not got round to looking at yet. One important point before use is that it is recommended that you run the oven at full temperature for about 45mins on first use as the heating elements give off a smell on first use. I have had no issues with smell after this. The oven must also be installed by an electrician via a 20A double pole switch. Functionally this oven is capable of some great results and I am happy with its performance so far, I am pretty good with technology and do a good bit of cooking but have found the navigation menu and the different options take a bit of getting used to and the instructions don’t really help you get the best out what is undoubtedly a fantastic oven with a lot of features. If you want a simple easy to use oven this one might not be the one for you, I have had it for a week and am able to operate it easily enough but its going to take a bit of time to get the best out of this one, I am looking forward to trying the Turnspit for the family roast chicken this afternoon. Would I recommend it, yes certainly as the oven cooks well and most importantly it cooks evenly top to bottom & front to back unlike my old fan oven and it certainly has some great features, but a bit more clear guidance from the manufacturer would certainly help.

Pros: Good build quality, Looks good, Value for money Cons: Instructions lack detail
