Security on your Xbox One

A step-by-step guide to keeping your family safe with Xbox One.

There are plenty of handy features that help you and your family stay safe while playing on Xbox One. You can add accounts to your family membership, limit age-restricted content and control what people download and buy. In this guide, we’ll tell you how you can set these features, so you can focus on enjoying your favourite games.

Adding a new family member

With a family account on Xbox One, it’s easier than ever to keep track of what your children play and make sure they stay safe when they’re gaming. Follow these simple steps to add new members to your very own gaming squad:

  • Once you’re signed in, press the Xbox button.
  • Go to Settings and select All Settings.
  • Under Account, select Family. Here you can see the current members of your family.
  • Pick Add to family. The person you want to add will need to sign in to their account. If they don’t have one, select Add New and follow the simple steps to create a new account for them.

Success! Now you’ll be able to set security features that helps your family stay safe on Xbox One.

Limit age-restricted content

Like a lot of films, some games will have an age restriction on them. If your child is under 8, their access to anything inappropriate is automatically blocked. To change these settings, or set content restrictions for other accounts, head back to the Family menu (follow the steps from before). Select the account you want to update and go to Access to content. Here you can decide what type of restrictions you want to set. This can be totally flexible too, so if your children are ready for a certain type of game, you can let them play to their hearts' content.

Block purchases

You can also set what kind of games and apps each family member downloads and buys on Xbox One. There are three options to choose from. To select one of these options, head back to the Family menu and select Access to content again. Here you can change the Buy and download setting, and make sure your children only play the titles you want them to.
