What is a Chromebook?

Find out everything you need to know about Chromebooks, including what they are and exactly how they differ from a Windows laptop.

A Chromebook is a laptop that runs ChromeOS, an operating system (OS) from Google. Almost all of them have an amazingly long battery life so you don’t have to worry about charging them up while you’re out and about.

A different kind of laptop

Chromebooks are incredibly fast and light. They have antivirus protection built-in, update automatically and they will instantly spring into life when you turn them on thanks to their quick operating system.

ChromeOS is an easy to use Operating System, which uses the internet browser Google Chrome to run most of your apps. In the lower left corner of the screen, you can set up shortcuts to your preferred programs. You can quickly access Google Photos to look at your recent memories or go on Netflix to stream your choice of box sets. Even if you aren’t connected to the internet, you can still edit and save your important work and watch your favourite movies on a long journey.

All the apps you need

There is a huge variety of apps available in the Chrome Web Store. If you like working on the go, you can use Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides. If you prefer Microsoft Office then you can get the online versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and more. And if you need to relax, you can listen to some music thanks to apps like Spotify, or play a massive choice of games.

Perfect for your studies

Chromebooks are designed for work, browsing the internet and streaming movies so they don’t need cutting-edge hardware. This means you can find the perfect one for you whatever your budget. They’re ideal for students who need a laptop with a long battery life to work on. They’re also great for younger children, both for their homework and for playing games.
