Two-way tumbling machines from AO get the job done
When you’re shopping for a new tumble dryer, look out for models with reverse tumble action. This clever tech makes the drum rotate in both directions, meaning more air gets into your clothes and they’ll dry off quicker and more thoroughly. It’s particularly helpful for delicate fabrics too, since it moves everything around gently, you can have it on a low spin speed or a fabric care cycle but still get the same great drying results. You won’t find any damp spots when you unload with that trick up your sleeve. It could even save you energy since it can cut the cycle times down, meaning you’re not using electricity for as long. There’s really no downside.
Finding the right model
If you’ve got the space or setup, vented tumble dryers with reverse action are a great shout. They filter the moist air straight out of your home, so you won’t have to keep emptying a tank every time you run a programme. And since all the moisture’s being pulled right out of the machine, you’ll get a quick, effective dry cycle every time. But if you want to be able to pop your machine anywhere, you’ll want a condenser or heat pump tumble dryer. Condenser models collect all the moisture into a tank that needs to be emptied regularly. Some models have clever tank tech that shows you when it’s full and is easy to remove, so it’s not such a problem. Plus, if you want to move your machine elsewhere, it’s as simple as disconnecting and reconnecting the plumbing and electrics – no removing and installing vents. And when it comes to heat pump dryers, these are the most efficient option because they recycle the hot air generated in the cycle to dry your clothes with that. But since they’re saving you a bundle in energy bills, they can take a bit longer than condensers or vented.
If you’re concerned about the cost of energy and want a really efficient machine, look at the energy rating on our product pages. They range from A+++ to G, with A+++ being the top level for energy efficiency. Our energy label page can tell you all the ins and outs of this system to help you make the right choice for your home.
Avoid being over or under capacity
Depending on how many people are living in your home, you might want a smaller or larger capacity to make the most of every cycle. If you have a big rotation of work shirts and school uniforms to get through, you’ll want 10kg or more as you won’t struggle to fill it every week. 14kg machines are some of the biggest, if you want to really load it up. It’s always worth remembering that overfilling your machine will lead to longer cycles or damp spots when the programme’s over. There needs to be space for air to get in between all your clothes for quick, effective drying. But if it’s just a couple of bits every now and then, you won’t want a big machine to fill up. Look for small models with around a 6kg or 7kg capacity so you don’t have to wait weeks for it to pile up before popping a cycle on.
