Do I need an integrated washer dryer?
Not necessarily. Integrated washer dryers are built to fit inside a kitchen unit and have a cupboard door attached to them. They also have a slight indentation at the bottom which a plinth covers. Freestanding models on the other hand can simply be placed wherever there's room and access to the plumbing.
What features should I look for?
Top-end washer dryers feature cycles for specialist fabrics as well programmes such as anti-stain, sports and anti-crease. Whereas a cheap washer dryer tends to only offer basic functions and very little when it comes to dealing with special fabrics. It's best to decide which programmes you need and narrow down your options that way.
What capacity do I need?
For someone living alone, a 5kg model should be enough but for a family of 4-5 people, a wash capacity of 7kg is a minimum. And there are models that offer 10kg+ capacities for bigger families. Always bear in mind that the drying capacity tends to be around half the wash capacity.
Can I get a hot fill washer dryer?
Nowadays, nearly all washer dryers are cold fill only. Heating up the small amount of water most machines use works out cheaper than taking in hot water from your boiler. And as the enzymes in biological detergents work best at low temperatures, you also get a better wash performance this way.
