    Washing machine cleaning guide

It's no secret that if your machine isn't spick and span, your clothes won’t be either. But what might surprise you is just how easy it is to keep your washer sparkling.

There are four main areas to give regular attention; the interior, the door, the detergent drawer, and the filter and drain pump. Each one plays a part in keeping your appliance running smoothly and smelling fresh , so a little upkeep now can help you dodge bigger problems later.

    The detergent drawer

Your detergent drawer might look harmless, but it’s usually where gunky residue likes to gather, and that can lead to mould if it’s left alone. Luckily, it's an easy fix.

    • Start by removing the drawer. Most slide out with a gentle pull, but if yours won’t budge, check your manufacturer’s instructions.
    • Soak it in warm, soapy water. A drop of washingup liquid or a splash of vinegar helps loosen any buildup.
    • Use an old toothbrush to scrub into the corners and crevices.
    • Wipe inside the drawer housing too, since grime likes to hide there.
    • Once everything’s dry, slot the drawer back in and you’re good to go.

    The door

Your washing machine’s rubber seal keeps water safely inside the drum, but it also tends to trap lint, hair and little pools of water.

    • Gently pull back the folds of the seal and wipe away any grime using a warm, damp cloth. Mild detergent or a bit of vinegar usually does the job.
    • If you spot black mould, use a mild bleach solution or a mould remover.
    • Dry the seal thoroughly once you’re done. That helps stop mould from making a comeback.

    The drum

A maintenance wash acts like a health check for your machine. It keeps everything running smoothly and helps banish stubborn smells.

    • Check your manual first. Some machines come with a dedicated drumclean cycle.
    • If yours doesn’t, run the hottest, longest cycle available.
    • Do this once a month to keep things in top shape. If it’s been a while, run three cycles backtoback.
    • Only add detergent to the middle cycle. The first and last should run with the drum empty.

    The filter and drain pump

Your drain pump filter usually sits behind a small panel at the bottom of your machine, and it’s well worth checking every few months.

    • Grab a towel and a shallow bowl before opening it, since some water will escape.
    • Slowly open the drain tube or filter cover and let the water flow out.
    • Remove the filter and clear away anything trapped inside like lint, hair, coins, the occasional mystery object.
    • Rinse it under hot water and scrub away any stubborn residue.
    • Once it’s clean, put the filter back in and close the panel securely. Doing this every few months helps keep your machine draining properly and avoids any surprise puddles.

    Top tips

Using too much detergent, especially liquids or pods, is one of the biggest culprits behind gunky build‑up and dodgy smells. Stick to the recommended amount and you’ll keep things running fresher for longer.

Tackle these simple steps every now and then and your washer will stay in great shape, making laundry day that bit easier. If only everything in life were this satisfying to clean!
