    Grass Trimmers Buying Guide

Discover the top 5 things you need to know before buying a grass trimmer.

If you want to give your garden that extra little bit of TLC, you’ll want a trusty grass trimmer to complete those finishing touches. We’ve got five top tips that’ll help you choose your new gardening tool.

    Corded or Cordless?

Corded grass trimmers give you non-stop power so you can get the job done in one go. They’re also easy to use and don’t need much care. If you have a large garden, definitely make sure to check the length of the cord just in case you need to get an extension cable. This way you’ll be able to reach every corner with no fuss.

If you’d prefer to move around more freely then a cordless model might be for you. They’re usually lighter than corded trimmers, super easy to use and are low maintenance. And because they’re battery powered, we’d recommend picking up an additional battery so you’ll always have one charged and ready to go.

    Lines Vs Blade

Most grass trimmers use a nylon wire cutting system known as lines, which spin at super-fast speeds to make light work of grass and small weeds. Look out for trimmers with two lines, they’ll tear though more grass even quicker.

Blades are more powerful and durable than lines, and you’ll find them in high end trimmers. They’re perfect for tearing through tough weeds and vegetation.

    Cutting Width

Whether you have a garden the size of a football pitch or a small allotment, you’ll need to make sure you get a model with the right cutting width. As a rule of thumb, a large cutting width will cover more ground faster while a smaller width is more useful in tighter areas.

    • 200 to 300mm – ideal for light grass and small to medium lawns.
    • 301 to 399mm – will do the job for thick grass and medium to large lawns.
    • 400mm and above – perfect for large gardens, thick grass and stubborn undergrowth.

    Weight & Adjustability

Keeping your garden in tip top shape can be hard work, so it’s important to choose a model with a weight that’s comfortable for you. Don’t fancy bending down? Look for a grass trimmer with a telescopic handle, which let you easily change the height to match yours. Some heavier models even have a strap or a second handle for that extra helping hand, so you can cover every blade of grass without breaking a sweat.

Other features to look out for

There are loads of handy features that’ll make gardening days a breeze, from flower guards which make sure your delicate flowers don’t get the chop, to adjustable heads which are ideal for hard to reach areas. And look out for trimmers that can double up as an edger, they’ll give the sides of your lawn that crisp, clean finish.
