It Couldn't Be Easier!
5/5
I have been looking into Bread Machines for the past few months as I could never find a wholemeal loaf that wasn't plain and can't seem to find any reason for it, so I wanted to have a go myself despite not being a confident baker.
I singled out the Tefal PF240E40 because it was consistently in the 'Top 10' lists of the many tech/review sites I visited, whereas the rest of the lists were all different.
During my research, the only consistent con attributed to this machine was actually the recipe book that came with it rather than the machine itself. I kept this in mind when my machine arrived and I made my first loaf, using the recipe book. However, I was pleasantly surprised.
-The machine is a lovely compact size, and it's a very tidy design, very sleek and incredibly easy to clean.
-It comes with (obviously) a bread pan and mixing paddle, but also a yoghurt pot with cheese strainer (because this machine can also make yoghurt, cheese, pizza dough, pasta dough etc.), a hook for fishing out the paddle (which has gotten stuck in all of my loaves so far but the hook makes easy work of getting it out again), a very useful little manual, and a recipe book.
- The recipe book is mostly full of gluten free recipes, with a couple of brown/alternate grain recipes, and a couple of white bread recipes, and then an assortment of extras such as pizza dough etc. Overall, the recipes are well laid out and explained in terms of measurements, order, loaf size, but they are very limited in scope. I suppose the book is best used as a starting point. I was irked to find that there was no recipe for French Bread despite it being a setting on the machine; I pulled a recipe from online and it roughly amounted to a 1000g loaf, if a tad smaller- and it was delicious!
- The machine has around 20 settings, including a Delay setting so that you can bake a loaf while you're out or sleeping, however the lack of a dispenser tray built into the machine means that your delayed loaf will have to be plain. In order to add things to your loaves, the machine gives out a beep to tell you when to chuck the extras in.
- There are 3 crust settings: Light, Medium, Dark. I made my wholemeal loaf with the crust at Medium and it was a tad tough. I made my French Bread with the crust on Light setting (as the manual described the loaf as having a heftier crust anyway) and it was perfect!
- OVERALL: The Tefal PF240E40 bread maker is a wonderful machine. It's compact, quiet, easy to store, easy to use, easy to clean, and the manual it comes with is a great teacher. The recipe book is limited, but the loaves I've made have tasted great! If I want some fresh bread, I spend literally 5 minutes pouring ingredients into my bread maker and in a few hours I have beautifully baked bread. It couldn't be easier!
