    How to organise your freezer

Tired of not being able to find your frozen treats? By organising your freezer, you don’t have to waste time rummaging around, and you can take better care of your appliance too. It can even cut down on trips to the supermarket as placing your food in the best conditions keeps it fresher for longer.

If you’re looking for a bit of freezer organising inspo, you’re in luck. We’ve had a chat with Kate @thefullfreezer who’s given us plenty of nifty tips and tricks to best use the space you have.

Step-by-step guide to organising your freezer

From plastic tubs to categorising food, there’re plenty of ways you can give that weekly shop the TLC it deserves. And since a neatly organised freezer can make your life just that little bit easier, we’ve put a quick guide on how you can get started:

    1. Empty and clean

Start by emptying out your freezer and giving it a good scrub. This gives you the chance to remove any icy build-ups, wipe the drawers, and get rid of anything that you may have forgotten about.

    2. Sort and group

Now, before you pop all those frozen goodies away, sorting them into groups can help. Whether it’s meat, fish and veggies, or breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you can easily find what you want and are less likely to forget what you have.

    3. Use containers and labels

If you love to meal prep or don’t want to waste leftovers, then having reusable plastic tubs helps keep things organised. You can even label and date them to make sure you know which items you need to get through first.

    4. Arrange strategically

Got a feel-good meal that you love to make after work? Make sure you keep everything you need in more accessible parts of the freezer.

    5. Maximise space

Make use of the vertical space by stacking boxes and meals on top of each other – those plastic tubs just came in even handier.

    6. Maintain regularly

Removing icy build-ups isn’t a fun chore, but by doing so you can free up more room for the foods you love. So, by spending just a little bit of time getting rid of ice, you won’t have to fight to get the freezer drawer open.

What are the benefits of an organised freezer?

    Timesaving

You won’t waste time rooting around for the foods you love when everything has its own home.

    Reduced waste

By knowing which items are the oldest, you can plan your meals and not have to worry about a wasted sack of spuds in the back of the freezer.

    Extended shelf life

Keeping everything properly organised helps keep temperatures steady and makes sure food lasts longer.

    Stress-free meal planning

With an organised freezer, meal prep becomes a breeze. You can easily see what you’ve got available, perfect for whipping up dinner in a hurry.

    Organising different types of freezers

Depending on the type of appliance you may need a different approach. For example, while upright models have drawers to tidy things away, a chest freezer has more depth and usually comes with a separate basket area – perfect for separating out your food.

To keep your stand-up freezer organised, start by categorising your frozen goods. Group similar items together, such as meats, vegetables, and desserts. Use storage containers or freezer bags to separate and label any leftovers. This way, you can quickly locate what you need without having to dig through a pile of frozen items.

Chest freezers, on the other hand, offer more storage space and are great for bulk buying or storing larger items. To maximise the space in your chest freezer, consider using stackable baskets or bins. These will help you create separate sections for different types of food. You can also use dividers or trays to create additional compartments. By doing so, you can prevent items from being lost among the frost and ensure easy access to all your tasty treats.

    Things to avoid

One common mistake is overpacking your freezer. It can be tempting to cram as much as possible into your freezer, but this can prevent the air flowing around and lead to uneven cooling. When this is restricted, your appliance works harder to keep everything frozen, which can result in higher energy consumption, freezer burns on your food, and extra stress on the motor. To avoid this, make sure to leave some space between items in your freezer to allow the air to get through.

Another mistake to avoid is not rotating food items. When you bring home groceries, place the newly purchased items behind the existing ones in your freezer. This prevents older items from being forgotten about. By rotating your food items, you can keep food waste to a minimum and make every shop go a little bit further.

By just making a few easy changes to how you pop away your frozen goodies, you can make your day that little bit easier. Now when it comes to cooking up delicious dinners, you won’t have to root around for the veggies, and since an organised freezer is more energy-efficient, you can save a few pennies along the way.
