A washing machine’s energy rating will tell you how energy efficient the model is. Ratings range from A – G, and a more efficient appliance means you’ll save more money on your energy bills. Look out for a washing machine with an energy rating of C or above, these will be some of the most energy efficient models on the market.
Washing machines often have sensors that measure the load. Their job is to make sure the appliance only uses as much water as it actually needs, cutting down on waste and putting some cash back in your pocket.
An Eco Wash programme uses lower temperatures during a cycle. It’s great for small loads or refreshing clothes that aren't too dirty. And since it doesn’t need as much energy, it’ll save you some cash.
An Inverter Motor spins the drum with magnets, so there’s less friction during a cycle. That means the washing machine runs much smoother and quieter, while reducing energy waste..
If you’ve only worn an outfit once or twice, then a Quick Wash is ideal. This programme can get through a couple of bits in as little as 15 minutes, so there’s no need to waste water and energy on a full cycle.

Haier’s washing machines are the quietest on the market, thanks to their beltless Direct Motion motors. Using fewer mechanical components than traditional machines, the motor produces fewer vibrations – which in turn reduces noise levels for quieter spin cycles. Not only is this great for open plan living, it also means you won’t use as much energy, saving you a pretty penny in the process.
Whether you opt for an A-rated washing machine or not, there are plenty of features that’ll help you save money on your bills. Here are just a few to look out for.
Think stain removal means high temperatures and never-ending wash cycles? Think again. Hotpoint’s clever ActiveCare works with a bunch of other programmes on your machine to remove more than a whopping 100 stains at just 20 degrees – meaning it's gentle on fabrics too. It mixes water and detergent together before releasing it into the drum and letting it loose on the laundry. So, you’ll always have spotless clothes no matter what.
Whether you’re saving for something special or cutting down on costs, KG Mode has your back. It weighs the load during the first 4 minutes of a wash, adjusting the programme time and amount of water to suit what’s inside. This makes it extra efficient, so when you go to put the next batch of bedding on, you don’t have to worry about those utility bills.
i-DOS automatically adds the perfect amount of detergent to your wash. You can store a whole bottle of detergent inside the machine, so it won’t need filling up as often. Plus, because you don’t have to guess how much to use, you’ll save money on detergent and your clothes will always be sparkling clean.
ProSense® technology finds the best wash cycle for your load, to give your clothes an unbeatable clean. Special sensors in the drum will recognise the type of fabrics inside and which settings are needed to leave them spotless. It also tailors the length of the cycle, to make sure items aren’t being over washed. This prevents them becoming worn out, and there won’t be any wasted water or energy racking up those bills.
There are a couple of ways to shave some pennies off your bills when it comes to laundry. The most expensive time to load the drum is between 4pm-7pm, so try running your washing machine before or after those times. Plus, turning down the temperature to 30° can also cut your costs by half, and you still get great results.
Energy ratings tell you how efficient a washing machine is. It’s measured in kilowatts per hour and ranges from A to G, with A being the very best. An A-rated appliance causes much less waste and saves you money on your bills. You can find out more info on our Help & Advice page.
Any washing machine with an A energy rating is going to be the most efficient. For the money you’ll save on your bills, they’re well worth the investment. We’ve got a great range of A-rated appliances for you to browse here.
