A complex bit of kit, lacking in sound quality
4/5
I have no doubt that this is a great TV picture-wise. Sound quality from the screen speakers is pretty dire unfortunately and is in desperate need of an add-on sound bar, sub-woofer and ideally, rear speakers. I could not get my existing non-4K system to work with it. Sony have their own versions of all 3 add-ons, but are ridiculously expensive, adding the equivalent cost of the TV again. I have bought the sound bar and will be adding the sub-woofer shortly. The rears can wait for now.
The great advantage of the Sony add-on products is that they so easy to set up. The TV itself, is not quiet so. You need to realise that this is a Google TV and will require a Google Account in addition to a Sony one. There are a few things in the set up that worry me, from a privacy point of view, so just be careful as you give permissions.
Colour calibration was not too bad straight out of the box, but be aware, trying it yourself can be tricky if you don't understand the technicalities - it's far more than brightness and contrast. The supplied documentation is pretty useless, but there are some informative videos on the net that demonstrate how the parameters work. I've been tweaking for a few days now and I'm pretty close to how I like it.
I'm pretty pleased with the product now that it is enhanced, but I could not live with it sound-wise in just the boxed state. That makes it a very expensive option that I sort of new might be the case, but still comes as a shock.
