If you’re not sure what you’re after, our buying guide can point you in the right direction.
The ideal level for your fridge should sit between 3°C and 5°C to keep your fresh food at its best – that’s around a 3 on a 1-5 scale or 4/5 on a 1-9 scale. Your freezer works best at -18°C, so 3 on a 1-5 scale or a 4 on a 1-7 scale.
There are a few reasons your fridge freezer might not be running as it should. Check your vents to see if they’re blocked with dust, make sure your fridge isn’t too full and air can get around all your food, and look at the door seals in case they’re damaged and not insulating properly. If all of that looks good, you might have a faulty thermostat or need an engineer to take a look at the motor.
Your fridge should be between half and 2/3 full and your freezer should be as full as possible without blocking the vents. That keeps the temperature stable in each cabinet.
Clean the door seals with warm soapy water regularly – and avoid any abrasive cleaners. Vacuum the coils at the back every few months to keep things efficient. We go into more detail on our cleaning guide.
