How to clean your fridge freezer

Whether there’s a funny smell or a spillage on one of the shelves, every now and again your fridge freezer will need to be given a good clean. Keep your food fresh and give your groceries a place that they can be proud to call home!

The best time to clean your fridge freezer is before the big food shop, as it will lead to less food waste since you'll have to get everything out.

    A quick clean

If something's spilled or you just want to freshen the fridge up, check out our video that runs through the simple steps to give your fridge some TLC.

    The deep clean

If your fridge and freezer compartments are long overdue a good scrubbing, follow our steps below to give all the compartments a really thorough clean.

    Shelves and drawers

Now the food has been taken care of, you’re free to take the shelves and drawers out of the appliance. Put them in a hot, soapy water and gently scrub with a soft sponge. This is a really effective way to get rid of any stains and germs. For any dried-on, stubborn spillages, antibacterial spray should do the job. Rinse in plain water and let the shelves and drawers dry naturally.

    Freezer compartment

If you’ve got a manual defrost freezer, you’ll need to get rid of any icy build-ups that are lurking around. Grab that ice scraper from the car or something similar if you’ve got it and scrape away the ice. Catch the ice in a bucket and if any of it starts to melt on the kitchen floor or in the freezer, just wipe up with a towel.

    Clean inside

Let’s get to work on the inside of your fridge. Spray the walls, edges and corners with an antibacterial spray and wipe down with a damp cloth. Not only does this kill off any unwanted bacteria and germs, it’ll also banish bad smells. Rinse away with plain water and you’re done.

    Freshen up the seals

The door seals can also carry nasty odours and bacteria if they aren’t cleaned. With soapy water and a cloth or a toothbrush, scrub all the way along. Rinse with water and pat them dry with some kitchen roll. Easy.

    Something doesn't smell right...

If you’re trying to get rid of a particular bad smell, there’s a quick and easy fix. Mix an equal amount of water with baking soda and give your appliance another good scrub. The baking soda acts as an absorbent for those lingering odours and will leave everything smelling nice and fresh.

    And finally...

Almost there. Just turn the plug back on, put the shelves and drawers back where they belong and let it power up and cool down again. Then, you’re free to return your food to the sparklingly clean fridge freezer. If you follow the above stops regularly, you’ll keep bacteria at bay and your food will stay fresh for longer. Easy peasy!
