Using a carpet cleaner is relatively simple, but there are a few steps to sort before you get going. For the deepest clean, you’ll first want to give your carpets a once over with a vacuum cleaner, making sure to carefully move any furniture out the way too – that’ll save you stopping and starting halfway through. Then you’ll need to fill up the water tank to the appropriate level, as well as adding the recommended cleaning detergent to the solution tank. From here, we thoroughly recommend you read the product manual for your specific make and model, as functions can vary from brand to brand.
The best carpet cleaner for you will depend on the area you want to use it on. For small, tight spaces, you should look out for a model with a crevice tool – this lets you easily reach every nook and cranny. Some will come with lots of attachments, like handheld scrubbing brushes for stairs and pet hair. If you’re going to be cleaning on multiple levels, you’ll want a relatively lightweight unit, as well as keeping an eye out for handy extras like automatic detergent mixing, water heaters, and upholstery tools.
The cost of carpet cleaners can vary quite dramatically, with models starting from as low as £90, to feature-rich brands costing £300 and over. We have heaps of clever units to suit any budget, from brands like Vax, Rug Doctor, Shark, and Bissell. Take a look at our carpet cleaners page for more info.
Your Vax carpet cleaner could be leaking water for a few reasons, but first it’s best to check that the water tank and detergent container are correctly fastened. If this doesn’t correct the issue and you’re still unsure, take a look at the troubleshooting advice in your product manual.
Like all carpet cleaners, a Vax carpet cleaner works by mixing detergent and warm water, releasing solution while the spinning scrub brushes remove ground-in dirt and stains. Typically, you’ll set the model to its ‘wash’ function, squeezing a trigger while pushing the cleaner forward over your surfaces. Then, you’ll release the trigger, pulling the model backwards over the area you just cleaned to remove dirt. Once you’re satisfied, you can then switch the function to ‘rinse’, repeating the same motions using only water to get rid of any excess solution and moisture. As always, we suggest reading your product manual for model-specific instructions. You can find our range of Vax carpet cleaners here.
Like a steam cleaner, some steam mops can also treat carpets. First things first, we recommend that you have a gander at your product manual before you get started, as the process will vary between brands and models. Some may need you to use additional attachments. Once you’re happy to go ahead, as with standard carpet cleaners, we suggest you vacuum clean the room and move any furniture out of the way. Then, you’ll need to fill up the water tank with the appropriate amount, following the manufacturer’s instructions as per the manual. It’s important to first do a patch test on an inconspicuous area to see your carpet’s tolerance to steam.
