What is refresh rate?

Find out everything you need to know about a computer screen’s refresh rate.

The refresh rate, also known as frames per second (FPS), is the amount of times the image on your screen updates. The more frames you can fit into a second, the smoother your game will be. In this guide, we’ll run you through the perfect refresh rate for you and how it can fully immerse you in biggest and best gaming blockbusters.

What is refresh rate?

Your favourite games, just like any movie or TV show, are made up of single images played like a slideshow. These are called frames, and the refresh rate is the amount of these your monitor or laptop screen can show in one second. It’s measured in Hertz (Hz) and the higher it is, the smoother the picture will look on screen. 60Hz will make your games look great, but upgrade to 100Hz or more for stunning graphics and slick, fluid action that looks more natural.

FreeSync vs. G-Sync?

FreeSync and G-Sync help to connect your computer’s screen to the graphics card. They deliver smooth visuals and stop screen tearing, which is when the pixels on screen don’t update at the same time, causing the picture to look torn. They both do the same job, but you’ll need to pair them to the most suitable type of graphics card in your PC. Models with G-Sync work with NVIDIA graphics cards, while FreeSync screens work with AMD cards. It’s easier if you have a laptop. Since everything is built-in, you know you’ll have the right tech for the job.

Response time

To give you the best looking visuals and really slick gameplay, you’ll want to pair your soaring refresh rate with a lightning quick response time. This is the amount of time it takes for your screen to update individual pixels with new colours. So when you’re controlling your game, your movements on screen are more natural. If you want to know more about your computer’s response time, we’ve got a really handy guide with everything you need.
