What is VR?

Find out everything you need to know about virtual reality, and the tech you need to enjoy it, with our helpful guide.

Virtual reality technology has been around for decades, but it’s only with recent advances in tech that it’s now something you can enjoy at home. If you’ve never had the chance to try virtual reality, then you probably aren’t aware what it’s truly capable of. We’ve got you covered though, read on to learn just what you can do with virtual reality and the kit you need to get it all set up.

Virtual reality explained

Virtual reality is technology that puts you at the heart of a virtual world. Essentially it’s a game or a video that surrounds you, which you can see through a headset. Small screens in the headset sit just in front of your eyes, and motion sensors in the camera track your head. So when you look around, the video moves with you. The potential for games, and educational software is pretty awesome – imagine strolling through Ancient Rome or diving below the depths of an ocean to explore marine life, all in your own living room. It’s exciting stuff.

The tech you need

In order to enjoy VR games and programs, you need a few bits of kit. Firstly, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got a VR headset – they’re essential. Then you’ll need a PC powerful enough to run VR titles. Virtual reality games are very demanding, and require top spec hardware to run. You should be looking at an i5 processor as a minimum, along with 8GB of RAM – but an i7 processor and 16GB of RAM would be preferred for a smoother experience. Most important is the graphics card – only the top GeForce GTX 1070 or 1080 will do, so don’t settle for less.
