How to back up files on Windows 10

Accidents happen. If your laptop is hit by a virus, taken hostage by the kids or the victim of a drink spill, you need to protect your data. We’ll show you how to back up the files on your Windows laptop using an external hard drive so you can relax knowing that killer novel is safe and sound.

How to back up files on your Windows laptop

  • Connect your external hard drive to one of your laptop's USB drives
  • Click on the Windows icon in the bottom left to go to the Start menu, type in Backup settings into the search bar and open it up
  • Flick Automatically back up my files to On
  • If you want to back up your files immediately, click on More options
  • Click Back up now

All set! This might take a while but rest assured, your photos, documents and maybe even some secrets, are safe.

Other ways to back up your data

There are plenty of ways you can back up your CVs, wedding photos or the kids’ homework. Services like Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive store your data online using The Cloud (the what?!), which you can get to whenever you need it.
