How to set up parental controls on your laptop

Limit the time they spend online and restrict the content they can use.

Once you’ve created a child account on your Windows 10 laptop, parental controls help them stay safe when they’re online. We’ll show you how to set up timers, restrict the games they play and put spending limits on their account in a few simple steps.

How to limit your child's screen time

  • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/family/ and log in to your Microsoft account
  • Find your child’s name from the menu and click on Screen time
  • From here, you can set up a schedule for when your kids can use the laptop each day (so they can use it at any point between 8am to 8pm, for example). If you have an Xbox One, you can also set a timer for this.
  • You can also decide how much time your kids can spend on the laptop. You can allow a certain numbers of hours within the set time or if you want to give them the full amount (so unlimited use between 8am to 8pm), select Max scheduled.

All set! Limiting their screen time is perfect during the summer holidays if you’re encouraging the kids to get a bit of fresh air and soak up the sun.

How to restrict apps, games and media

  • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/family/ and log in to your Microsoft account
  • Find your child’s name from the menu and click on Content restrictions
  • Head to Apps, games & media and flick Block inappropriate apps, games & media from Off to On
  • You can also apply an age limit, so your kids can only use media that is appropriate for them
  • Your children can still request to use a blocked game. You’ll be able to approve it and add it to the Always allowed list, which you can find underneath Content restrictions.

All set! With this, you can make sure that your kids will only be using apps, games and media that you think are appropriate for them.

How to put spending limits on a child's Windows account

  • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/family/ and log in to your Microsoft account
  • Find your child’s name from the menu and click on Content restrictions
  • Look for Needs adult approval to buy things and switch it to On
  • Whenever the kids try to buy anything on their account, you’ll need to approve it through your email or on https://account.microsoft.com/family.

All set! Now you can keep a closer eye on what your kids are spending money on online, whether it’s games, apps or everyday items like clothing.
