How to set up Windows Hello

Find out how to set up Windows Hello in just a few simple steps.

Windows Hello is a great feature that’s available as part of the Windows 10 package. It uses facial recognition technology or a fingerprint reader to log you into your computer. You don’t have to remember a password, and it keeps all your pictures, documents and cheesy music playlists safe and secure.

Not all computers are blessed with this amazing bit of tech, so take a look at our range of Windows Hello ready computers and tablets.

First things first...

  1. Press the Windows logo in the bottom left corner of the screen and click on the ‘Settings’ icon.
  2. Click on ‘Accounts’ and then go to the ‘Sign-in option’ on the left hand
  3. You need to set up a PIN before you use Windows Hello, so click on the ‘Add’ button under ‘PIN’ to get one. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to click on the “Set up” button to get things started.

Setting up Face scanning

  1. Click on ‘Set up’ under the ‘Face’ option and then click on ‘Get started’.
  2. Position yourself in the centre of the frame that pops up, so that your face can be scanned. This shouldn’t take more than a minute.
  3. Scan your face again by clicking ‘Improve recognition’ to make sure Windows Hello can easily recognise you when you use it. If you sometimes wear glasses, make sure you record one scan when you’re wearing them, and one without. That way, your computer will always know it’s you.

Success! Now you can sign-in to your computer or log-in to your favourite apps and programs with just a look into your camera.

Setting up Fingerprint reading

Setting up ‘Fingerprint’ reading

  1. Click on ‘Set up’ under the ‘Fingerprint’ section and click on ‘Get started’.
  2. Place your finger on your fingerprint reader. You’ll have to do this a few times in order for the reader to get a full scan of your fingerprint.
  3. Scan more fingers by clicking ‘Add another’ if you want to.

Success! You can now use your fingerprint to sign-in to your Windows computer, making it quicker and easier to get to your favourite programs.
