Coffee beans aren’t actually beans at all! They’re the seeds of the coffee cherry, which is a small red or purple fruit that grows on coffee plants. You wouldn’t recognise them before roasting either, because they’re green.
The word “espresso” comes from the Italian term “esprimere”, which means “to press out”. This refers to the method of pushing high-pressured hot water through finely-ground coffee.
Decaff doesn’t mean it’s caffeine-free. A cup contains about 2–5mg of caffeine – but it’s a lighter option for an afternoon or evening drink.
There are over 100 coffee species, but only two are widely used: Arabica, which is smooth and sweet, and Robusta, which is strong with a more bitter flavour.
Bean-to-cup machines grind fresh beans for each cup, espresso machines are ideal for strong, barista-style coffee, filter machines brew more cups at once, and pod machines are convenient thanks to pre-packaged pods.
Pod machines are great for beginners. They’re quick, easy to use, and simple to clean.
Only if you’re using a machine that doesn’t have one built in, like a manual espresso or filter machine. Bean-to-cup machines come with integrated grinders.
Yes! Many machines come with steam wands or automatic milk frothers. Look for features like “milk system” or “latte function”.
It depends on the type of coffee machine you’ve got – always check the manufacturer’s advice for your model and some machines have an indicator that lets you know when it needs some TLC. As a general rule, pod machines need a weekly wipe-down and monthly descaling if you’re using it every day. Bean-to-cup machines need the brew unit cleaning weekly and a monthly descale. And espresso machines need a quick rinse after every use and a weekly deep clean.
Bean-to-cup or filter machines are ideal as they can make multiple cups quickly and consistently.
Most machines have eco modes or auto shut-off features to keep them running efficiently. Check the product page for energy ratings on specific models.
Some machines are compatible with third-party pods, but others (like Nespresso or Tassimo) may require brand-specific pods for best results. Check the advice from your model’s manufacturer to find out the best pods to use."
