    How to make an iced coffee with your coffee machine

    It only takes a quick glance at the line in your local coffee shop to see that an iced coffee has become an everyday staple. And what’s better? It’s way easier than you’d think to make at home. So, skip the queues and give your barista a run for their money with our simple step-by-step guide on how to brew your own cool cuppa.

    Which type of iced coffee will you choose?

    Your typical high street coffee shop has more options than you can shake a straw at, so exactly which one you want to prep at home is just down to personal taste.

    Cool and classic

    If you’re after a cuppa with a strong, crisp flavour, then an iced americano should be on the menu. It’s a super simple option to make too, you’ll just need espresso, cold water, and ice. Or, if you prefer something a little smoother, you can make an iced latte with the same ingredients, but you’ll need milk as well.

    Sweet indulgence

    Trying to satisfy that sweet tooth? Dessert-style iced coffees, also known as frappés, give you the best of both worlds, a bold brew with a sugary twist. There are as many possibilities as you can think of when it comes to these blissful brews. Whatever your taste, you’ll usually use whipped cream, and syrups or flavoured creamers.

    Slow and smooth

    Prefer a silky-smooth cold brew? While it’s also a cold caffeinated delight, it’s not the same as iced coffee. The way they’re made is pretty different. You can whip up an iced coffee in minutes, but a cold brew is a slow burner, it needs to steep for anywhere from 12 to 24 hours so, it might be quicker to join the coffee shop queue for that one.

    Here’s what you’ll need

    While there’s more than one way to brew your iced coffee, there are a few must-haves.

    • Coffee: Popping in a pod or grinding your go-to beans, try out different types to mix things up and maybe find a new favourite.
    • Milk: Whole, skimmed, almond, oat, or any other alternative will do the trick here.
    • Sweeteners: You can use sugar, honey, or substitutes, or skip entirely if you prefer a bold, unsweetened flavour.
    • Ice: Be sure to use large cubes or spheres as they melt slower, keeping things cool without watering down your drink. You could even pop room-temperature coffee into an ice tray and you’ve got coffee cubes ready whenever you fancy a chilled brew. That way, even as they melt, your drink stays bold and flavourful.

    Here’s how it’s done

    Now that you’ve picked your perfect pour, here’s how to make it happen: whether you’ve got a pod machine, bean-to-cup setup, or an espresso maker.

    Pod machine

    There’s a couple different ways to whip up an iced coffee with a pod machine.

    You can:

    1. Pop your favourite coffee pod into the machine, followed by the matching milk pod.
    2. Let that brew as usual.
    3. Set aside to chill.
    4. Once it’s at room temperature, pour over ice.

    Or, you could:

    1. Pop in a coffee pod.
    2. Pour it over a glass of ice so it begins to chill instantly.
    3. If you’re after a creamier cuppa, add cold milk. Or, for something a little lighter, use cold water instead.

    Bean to cup machine

    Again, there are a couple different ways you can prep an iced coffee with your bean to cup machine.

    You can:

    1. Hit the “latte” option on your machine, if it has one.
    2. Set the drink aside to cool to room temperature.
    3. Then, pour over ice.

    Or, you could:

    1. Grind your beans finely and brew a double espresso shot.
    2. Pour it over ice to chill right away.
    3. Depending on how you like it, add milk, sugar, or whipped cream.

    You just:

    1. Brew a double shot of espresso.
