Which pods are right for my coffee machine?

There’s nothing like that first cuppa of the day, but unless you have the correct pods, that silky smooth latte could become sloppy sludge, damage your machine or even break it.

With so many makes and models to choose from, how do you know which is the right choice? Our handy guide will take you through everything from flavours to compatibility, so you can separate the macchiatos from the messes and avoid a potential coffee catastrophe.

    Matching up with your machine

There are plenty of brands around with their own pod coffee machines, and they’re all slightly different. That means not every pod will fit every model, so you’ll need to check that you’re buying the right pods for yours. Finding compatible pods is easy, either buy ones from the same brand, or you can find third-party brands that make pods for a range of models. Just double check they’re made to match first, manufacturers will always list which models their pods will work with to keep things simple.

So, why do different coffee machines need different pods? It’s all to do with how they brew your coffee, and the clever clogs at each brand all come up with their own way to deliver delicious drinks. Nespresso® machines use a high-pressure extraction for rich flavours, and so their pods are designed to fit this method. Tassimo on the other hand do things a little differently, scanning barcodes which let the machine know what time, temperature and amount of water to use. This means you get the perfect blend every time, with every drink coming out exactly the way you want it.

Want a quick rundown of which pods work with which machines? You got it.

    Nespresso®

Nespresso® Original – Official Nespresso® Original pods, as well as pods from third-party brands including Lavazza, L’OR Espresso, Rave Coffee and Colonna.

Nespresso® Vertuo – Only official Nespresso® Vertuo pods will work, as they come with a unique barcode your machine scans.

    Dualit

Dualit machines work with both Dualit and Nespresso® Original pods.

    Tassimo

Only Tassimo T Discs are compatible with Tassimo machines, but there are plenty of brands that make them, including Costa, Kenco, L’OR, Jacobs and Milka.

    Dolce Gusto

As well as their own pods, Dolce Gusto work with a range of other brands including Nescafe and Starbucks.

    Philips

Philips L’OR Barista machines work with all L’OR Espresso pods.

Remember to always double check pods will work with your machine before you buy them. You’ll find all the info you need on the box.

    Pondering pods

Just because you need to use compatible pods doesn't mean you’re stuck with the same type of coffee every day. Variety is the spice of life, right? One of the perks of pod coffee machines is how many flavours and blends there are to choose from.

If you like something on the stronger side, dark roast pods are the perfect choice. They deliver deep flavours with hints of dark chocolate or toasted nuts, making them ideal for an early-morning pick-me-up or something to wind down with after dinner.

Smooth blend pods offer a gentler drink but are equally delicious. They’re packed with flavour and are easy to enjoy, so if you’re after a drink on the lighter side, these are the way to go.

Want barista-quality coffee in the comfort of your own home? Flavoured pods are the way to go. With options including caramel, vanilla and hazelnut, they offer something a bit different and a tasty way to warm up those colder days.

Coffee that cares for the planet

Some pods are made from compostable materials. That means instead of filling up your bin, they’re plant-based and will break down naturally. It’s always worth checking how to dispose of pods, as compostable ones won’t always be suitable for your compost heap at home. You won’t have to second guess what to do with them though, there’ll be instructions on the box.

Others are recyclable, so they can go in your recycling bins at home, while some brands like Nespresso® and Tassimo offer their own free recycling services that let you drop off used pods at a nearby collection point. Nespresso® can also arrange to have up to 3 bags of pods collected on your doorstep (your Postie will even bring the label for you). Easy peasy and planet-friendly.

You don’t always have to chuck away your pods either. Some can reused with your own ground coffee, not only saving waste but also letting you pick the strength of your drink. Simply check the box to see which pods can be reused instead of recycled.

    Tips to boost your brew

Want to get the most out of every coffee? There’s a few ways you can take each drink to the next level.

A pod holder will keep you organised, while a milk frother is great for a foamy finish.

Pre-programmed drinks mean your new favourite coffee could be just a touch of a button away.

Warm your cup up before you make your coffee. This easy trick locks in the heat for longer.

Pair up your coffee with a tasty snack. Espressos go great with dark chocolate, while milder blends are the perfect companion for pastries.
