The move to 3D thinking

With 3D technology enjoying a resurgence in 2017, we take a look further into the future and how we could be building and thinking in three dimensions. Microsoft have set the ball rolling with Paint 3D and Remix 3D. Does this mean we are getting ever closer to working in 3D as we currently do in 2D?

VR, MR, 3D

No, not just acronyms, but proof that there is demand for change in how we work and think. Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR) and 3D printing are becoming increasingly popular because of their interactive and immersive nature. We already think three-dimensionally and these technologies allow us to experience our wild and wonderful ideas as we imagine them, rather than simply displaying them on 2D screens.

Paint and Remix 3D

Microsoft are flying the 3D flag and taking the first steps into incorporating the three-dimensional world into our everyday. Their Paint 3D program is like a supercharged version of the Paint we know and love. You can have hours of fun creating and developing a range of 3D models. Then there’s Remix 3D which is kind of a social network for your 3D masterpieces. Here, you can share what you’ve done and even ‘remix’ other people’s work. There are now plans to use these 3D creations in other Office programmes, like Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Imagine the reaction in the office when you jazz up your presentation with interactive ideas from another dimension…

What's next?

After the decline of 3D TVs, it appears that the entertainment world have learnt a few lessons. Researchers are currently developing a screen that would allow 3D immersion without the need for glasses. Maybe if there’s less equipment needed, 3D will find its way back into our living rooms. Perhaps the best news though is that Sir David Attenborough is to be made into a 3D hologram. The legend will take you on a tour of London's National History Museum from the comfort of your own living room. Pinch yourself, you're not dreaming. The absolute goal is for us all to be able to seamlessly bring an idea into the real world via 3D tech. Who knows, you could be creating your dream home set-up in a 3D environment on ao.com!
