There are so many things I love about crostini. First of all they are delicious. Secondly, they are super easy to make, and lastly, you can top them with whatever ingredients you like. I find these make real crowd-pleasing canapés and any time I’ve prepared them for guests, they’ve always gone down a treat. In this recipe, I’ve gone for three of my favourite toppings; parma ham and fig, smoked salmon and cream cheese and mature cheddar and grape.

    Here's what you'll need...

    • Half a French baguette, sliced thinly
    • Olive oil
    • 4 slices of parma ham
    • 2 figs
    • 4 slices of smoked salmon
    • A tablespoon of cream cheese
    • A few springs of dill
    • 4 slices of mature white cheddar
    • 4 grapes

    Here's how it's done... Crostini

Pre-heat the oven to 200°C. Slice the bread thinly – each slice should be around 1.5cm thick. Brush each side of bread with olive oil before placing on a baking sheet lined with greaseproof paper. Bake for 10 minutes or until the bread has taken on a cracker-like consistency.

    Parma Ham & Fig

Remove the crostini from the oven and allow to cool. When they are no longer hot, you can start to top them. For the parma ham and fig crostini, simply drape the meat on the crostini. Cut the fig into quarters and place one quarter on top of the parma ham.

    Salmon & Cream Cheese

If you like the sound of the salmon option, start by spreading some cream cheese onto the crostini. Now, add a slice of smoked salmon and top with a sprig of dill.

    Cheddar Cheese & Grape

For the cheddar cheese and grape option, place a slice of cheese on top of the crostini. Cut your grapes in half and now place two grape halves on each crostini.
