What is streaming?

Find out everything you need to know about streaming.

Since hitting our monitors in 2011, game streams have been one of the biggest and most popular sensations in the gaming community. Read our guide to discover what it is, how it can enhance your gaming experience and how you can get involved in steaming.

What is streaming?

You may have heard of streaming films or TV shows, but we’re going to talk about something way more exciting instead – game streaming. So, what is it? To put it simply, this is when one person records footage from their game, and uploads it for people to watch and follow along live. Each stream has a chat window where viewers can talk and create a dialogue with the host, creating an online community. Popular sites like Twitch and YouTube have a huge variety of different streams, from people showcasing the latest games to broadcasting massive e-sports events from around the world. Streaming isn’t just limited to gaming content either, as there are plenty of artists and animators streaming their latest projects.

How to stream

If you want to give it a go yourself, you’ll need a fairly top-end PC to be able to stream without any drops in quality. We recommend getting a gaming desktop, with a speedy processor, at least 8GB of RAM and a high-spec graphics card so your games look incredible. To enhance your streaming experience, invest in a webcam and gaming headset that has a microphone so you can interact with your viewers. Finally, a lot of streamers have two monitors so they can stay focused on the action of the game, and have a separate window for the channel’s chat room.

How streaming influences gaming

Over the years, people have found new ways to use game streaming services. For example, some people use streams to see what other like-minded gamers are enjoying and use it to decide what games to buy next. They also use it as a source of gaming news and information, as lots of companies have started to use it to announce exciting new releases. In the past, viewers have even controlled the way certain games are played just by commenting on a stream. Their comments are translated into a command for the game’s character. Game streams are constantly evolving – so get involved and see what all the hype is about.
