What is a Smart TV?

Find out everything you need to know about Smart TVs, what they are and how you can get loads of TV options at your fingertips, with our helpful guide.

Long story short; a Smart TV is any TV that can connect to the internet. It can use loads of different kinds of applications, including the very best streaming services. As long as you have a stable internet connection, you can access loads of exciting TV and films so you’ll never be stuck for things to watch.

The different kinds of Smart TV

The software that makes your TV smart, called the operating system, can vary between different brands. Some prefer to make their own system, and these can vary in quality. Brands like LG and Samsung have invested a lot in their Smart TV software, so it’s slicker, faster to use and has loads of apps for you to mess around with. Companies like Sony use Android TV, which has a massive range of content, games and other apps available. This is built on the Android operating system, and is similar to what you can find on Android phones.

What you get with a Smart TV

The apps you get with your Smart TV depend on the operating system, as some have more than others. Most TVs will have free services like BBC iPlayer, ITV player, All 4 and My5 so you never miss out on your favourite shows. You can also watch the world’s most random videos on YouTube and stream the very latest in subscription entertainment with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Some Smart TVs come with a browser app, so you can visit websites on your TV, and some even have games you can play on your remote.
