It’s no surprise that the UK’s love for gardening has grown significantly during lockdown – in fact, it has birthed a new generation of green-fingered gardeners with 60% of millennials sharing the love of tending to their outdoor space!

What may have started out as a passion for house plants, has since branched out to millennials getting stuck right in (48%) as our survey of 2,000 people revealed that the garden is the new millennial hotspot with over half favouring it as the best part of their home.

Ben Thompson, 26, recently opted for a garden makeover after wanting a better garden space for his little boy to play outside. He said:

“It’s kept me sane and busy through such a strange and unusual time with something to focus on.

Both me and my partner knew that sorting our garden would make our house a much better space.

Rather than mud and mess we now have grass and a patio for easy keeping and cleaning. We have already got our use out of the garden on so many occasions it’s definitely not something we regret spending our money and time doing.”

Meanwhile,  the data showed lockdown had a part to play, as 66% of millennials said they had more time to get the garden transformed in lockdown and a further 62% who admitted this space had been vital to their wellbeing in lockdown.

David Lawson, managing director of AO.com, said:

“As we’re now in the middle of Summer, it’s the ideal time to get started on sprucing up your garden or outdoor space.

What’s interesting from the research, however, is the uptake we are seeing in younger age groups like millennials turning to this task, perhaps as they looked to fill the time we’ve had during lockdown when they might have normally been out shopping, eating out or going to the gym.

For those that want to create a new look in their garden or outdoor space, AO has a wide range of products to choose from that make the job as easy as possible for those tending to the task themselves.”

In fact, the research also revealed the top features millennials would have in their dream garden or outdoor space, with a BBQ/outdoor cooking area taking the top spot (41%) followed by a keen eye for outdoor lighting (38%) along with outdoor furniture and a swimming pool/hot tub for those hotter days.
