DIY: Make Your Own Ironing Board Cover

Time for a fresh press? If your ironing board cover’s looking a bit tired, don’t worry – we’ve got a quick and easy DIY that’ll have it looking brand new in no time. Let’s get crafty!

If your ironing board cover has seen better days (we’re talking scorch marks, mystery stains, and a bit of a sag), don’t bin the whole thing just yet. With a bit of fabric and a few simple steps, you can give it a fresh new look – and maybe even make ironing feel a bit less like a chore. Here’s how to make your own ironing board cover from scratch.

    Here's what you'll need...

    • A piece of cotton fabric (enough to cover your board with a few inches extra all around)
    • Heat-resistant batting or felt (optional, for extra padding)
    • Elastic cord or strong string
    • Safety pin
    • Scissors
    • Sewing machine or needle and thread
    • Measuring tape
    • Iron (yes, you’ll need it before you fix the board!)

    Step 1

Lay your ironing board upside down on your fabric and trace around it, leaving an extra 2–3 inches all the way around. This gives you enough room for seams and a snug fit.

    Step 2

Cut out your fabric and, if you’re using batting, cut a matching piece. Layer the batting underneath the fabric – this adds a bit of extra cushion and helps protect your board.

    Step 3

Fold the edge of the fabric over about an inch and iron it flat. Then sew around the edge to create a casing for your elastic or string – leave a small gap so you can thread it through.

    Step 4

Attach a safety pin to one end of your elastic or string and feed it through the casing. Once it’s all the way around, pull it tight so the cover hugs your board, then tie it off securely.

    Step 5

Pop your new cover onto the board, adjust it so it’s nice and smooth, and tighten the elastic if needed. Give it a quick press with the iron (how meta!) and you’re done.
