"It’s so close to Christmas! Schools have broken up and the celebrations are just days away. So while the kids are super excited about the big day, why not try the perfect recipe to keep them busy.

These cinnamon flavoured sugar cookies are so easy to make, the kids can really take charge. Once baked and cooled, they can be decorated and threaded with ribbon to make cute tree decorations or edible gifts."

    Here´s what you´ll need...

    • 45g slightly salted butter
    • 75g golden syrup
    • 30g caster sugar
    • 125g plain flour (plus extra for dusting)
    • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
    • 1/4 tsp bicarbonate of soda
    • 75g icing sugar
    • 2 tbsp water
    • 1 tsp edible silver balls
    • 1 metre red ribbon or string

    Here´s how it´s done... Step 1

Put the butter, syrup and sugar together in a pan and melt over a gentle heat. Put the flour, cinnamon and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl and add the cooled syrup. Mix thoroughly until everything is well combined.

    Step 2

Work the mix into a ball and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes or so until firm. Roll out on a floured board to approximately 3mm thick. Cut out your star shapes. Our cookie cutter managed eight on the first roll, then we gathered up the offcuts and rolled again to get four more.

    Step 3

Make a hole near a tip of each one. This is where you’ll thread your ribbon through later.

    Step 4

Place the stars on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. Bake in the oven for approximately 8 minutes until an even golden brown, then leave to cool completely. Mix the water and icing together drop by drop until you have a thick paste. You may not need all of the water.

    Step 5

Put the icing in an icing bag and snip off the very end to allow you to pipe fine lines. Starting from the centre of a cookie, pipe in lines out to towards each point. Pipe on the little details along each line.

    Step 6

Pop a silver ball in the centre of each star. Be sure to do this before the icing has set or it won't stick. Thread an 8-10cm piece of ribbon through each hole and tie off to finish.
