When we’re looking for a cool and refreshing drink on a hot summer day, chances are we’ll grab something quick and readily available. After all, most of the time we will be “on the go” and won’t necessarily have a fridge with our own stash of drinks handy. When, however, we have a little time to plan ahead, there’s no excuse to go for the ready-made, sugar-packed soft drinks from the supermarket’s chill section. A far better, healthier and – if I might say so myself – tastier option is a homemade lemonade.

Now, if you’re expecting a sugary and fizzy version, I’m sorry to disappoint. This lemonade is neither fizzy nor overly sweet. Instead it’s full of fresh flavours and a hint of sweetness provided by honey. It’s all natural and a real thirst-quencher and when loaded with ice cubes makes the most refreshing summer drink. Curious? Well, here’s the recipe. I hope you’ll like it as much as we do in my house.

    Here's what you'll need...

    • 5 lemons
    • 30 fresh basil leaves
    • 3 tbsp honey
    • 100ml water
    • 2l water
    • ice cubes

    Here's how it's done... Step 1

Finely chop the basil leaves. Put the chopped leaves into a bowl and mix with the honey. Add 100ml of water.

    Step 2

Now squeeze the juice from the lemons. Add the lemon juice to the basil/honey mix and put the bowl into the fridge and leave to steep over night.

    Step 3

When ready to serve put some ice cubes into a large jug. Pour the basil mix through a sieve into the jug.

    Step 4

Top with water and stir. Serve cold and enjoy!
